According to the 2025 American Community Survey, El Paso, Texas is the most bilingual city in the United States, with 65.9% of citizens reports speaking a language other than English at home. Moreover, 81.2% of El Paso County residents identify as Latino/Hispanic and 22.4% as foreign born. UTEP is situated less than a mile of the U.S.-México Border and is one of few Hispanic-serving, R1-distinguished universities. Given the prevalence of bilingualism in the community, El Paso has burgeoned into a hub for state-of-the-art research on bilingualism. The bilinguals in our community exhibit diverse language histories and individual levels of proficiency in English and Spanish. As such, the research on bilingualism conducted in El Paso spans a wide variety of topics and features frequent collaborations amongst the experts situated in the Paso del Norte/Borderplex region.
