Success story:

In early 2020, there was much less traffic on Tasman Drive due to the lockdown. Walk/Bike Tasman set out to get the city to close a lane on Tasman Drive to provide dedicated space for walking and biking. Together, we got over 30 Sunnyvale residents to write to the city council using the email template. Numerous others spoke at the city council meeting. The City Council approved the lane closure and it was installed in late August (see below for details).

Next steps:

  1. Permanent Eastbound lane closure: The Eastbound lane closure is set to expire in May 2021. We need to make sure that this stays and becomes permanent.

  2. Advocate for a Westbound lane closure: Residents of Casa De Amigos (population 3000) need a safe way to exit out of the West Entrance by foot and bike to access the shopping center at Fair Oaks and Tasman. Currently, the only options are to walk in car traffic on the Westbound side of Tasman on a blind curve or to cross the light rail tracks, which is technically illegal and very dangerous (someone was killed on crossing on September 26th, 2020).

Eastbound Lane Closure

City Council voted to approve creating a temporary walking and biking pathway on Tasman Dr. by closing a lane on the Eastbound side (AKA south side) of the street on June 30th, 2020. The lane closure was built in late August.

This is a huge success for everyone! We are now able to walk safely from Lawrence Expressway to Fair Oaks Ave. This will open up great opportunities for residents to travel by foot and by bike. The Silicon Valley Voice even wrote an article about it!

This pathway will last up to 10 months. In May 2021, the city will evaluate next steps We will see what happens afterward.

Thank you for your support. Our government best serves us when residents like you get involved and speak up. Thank you for getting involved and speaking up. Together, we have made a huge difference.
