Be a better use of space. Traffic on Tasman dr has dramatically decreased, and the streets are often empty
Help people get exercise, which improves mental and physical health. Exercise has become especially challenging because lock-down has trapped people in their houses and there are fewer places where people can get exercise because gyms and playgrounds have closed
Increase mobility and freedom under lock down while maintaining proper social distancing
Walking and biking is fun!
Not significantly. A single traffic lane can carry up to 1500 cars per hour. The graph below shows the vehicles/hour under pre-COVID conditions (obviously, traffic has increased since 2016, so just imagine the numbers are 15% higher for good measure). According to a study by UC Davis, traffic has decreased by 50% under lockdown. This means that even under peak hours, the number of vehicles/hour is less than 1500, so a single car lane in each direction should easily be able to carry all traffic. Additionally, with a bike lane installed, more people will travel by bike instead of by car, which will decrease traffic further.
Originally, this stretch of Tasman was designed to have two traffic lanes (not four) and bike lanes along the side. Unfortunately, the City of Sunnyvale decided to get rid of the bike lanes and make Tasman Dr a 4 lane road with no safe place for bikers.
There was also a plan for continuous sidewalks on both sides of the street, but it would be difficult to put them in without bulldozing the trees, so the plan was scrapped. Ironically, some trees had to be taken out anyway when Tasman Dr. was constructed. We were left with less trees, no bike lanes, and a fragmented sidewalk.
However, you can help fix this by asking the city to reduce Tasman Dr. back down to 2 traffic lanes and dedicate the space for pedestrians and people on bikes. This would provide space for pedestrians and cyclists, while still preserving our trees.
