Bike Bell App is an app that allows you to display floating widgets such as bells, timers, speedometer, and GPS data on top of your preferred cycling, music or mapping apps.
The app is produced free of charge, with no adverts and no registration required. You are in control of your own data. My name is Gareth Evans and I hope that you find this app useful as a cyclist.
This privacy policy was last updated on Thurs 26th March 2026 by me, the developer, Gareth Evans.
If you stumbled across this page, please check out the app on the Google Play Store.
This app requires certain permissions from you, the user, to make all features work. Here is a simple summary of them
Overlay / Display over other apps: Because the app runs as movable widgets that can be positioned above your other preferred cycling apps, the app requires the ability to display over other apps. This is essential for the app to run.
Notifications: Since the app runs as a service floating over other applications, it needs to provide you with a notification that keeps you alerted that the widget is showing. This ensures that you are in full control of when you close the app. This notification is required by Android to indicate that a Foreground Service is actively using your location to provide the overlay dashboard.. This, again, is essential for the app to run.
GPS / location tracking (foreground): If you choose to enable the GPS/location widget, you will be able to monitor your cycling speed, distance, active time, etc. Without giving the application this permission, you will not be able to use this widget, however, the bell and timer widgets will still function. When setting up this permission in the app, you are required to grant 'Precise' location, otherwise you speed and distance travelled will not be accurate. If you choose to do so, you can use a button in this widget to start recording your GPS location (longitude, lattitude and time stamps) in order to create and save a 'GPX" file that can be uploaded, if you choose, to other cycling apps such as Strava. The app does not share this with anyone (including the developer) and the app will not keep its own copy. Any saved files are created in your Downloads/ folder, where you can delete or use them as required. BikeBell collects location data to enable the speedometer and trip recording even when the app is closed or not in use. Without GPS/location permissions, you cannot use this widget
GPS / location tracking (background): Because the app uses floating widgets, you are free to open up any other apps that you choose. You can also turn off your screen or put it on to the lock screen to save battery. Because the app gives you the option to record and create a GPX file, without background location permissions, the GPS widget would not be able to correctly record your ride data would not be recorded. OverlayBikeBell collects location data to enable the speedometer and trip recording even when the app is closed or not in use. Without this permission, the GPS widget cannot function while you are using other apps or when your screen is locked.. Without this permission, you cannot use the GPS widget.
The GPS/Location widget receives data from your device sensors to determine your current position. As you move over time, the app is able to use and record the distance travelled, and is also able to calculate your speed (current, maximum, average) and elevation change. This data is what is shown on the GPS/Location widget. This is the only data used. Location data is processed in real-time on your device for the sole purpose of displaying cycling metrics. We do not collect, store on our servers, or share any location data with third parties.
In order to respect your privacy, the data used when you record a ride from the GPS/Location widget is deleted from the app when it is closed. If you choose to save the ride details before closing, the app will save a local only GPX file in your Downloads folder. It does not sync with external servers or cloud services. You can, if you choose to, use your GPX file to add a manual ride to your favourite cycling appliction (e.g. Strava, Komoot, etc.), or just delete the file.
None! The app has no ads, no analytic SDKs, and your data is not shared with anyone, including me.
