About us

Located at Sunnyvale Farm, Bean Creek, Northern NSW, Big Sky Alpacas began breeding alpacas in 2005. We have a small herd of white and light fawn huacaya, and our breeding focus is to produce alpacas with fine, dense fleece that is consistent across a sound frame, and a friendly nature. Over the years we have consistently improved the quality of our herd, through showing the animals we have bred (and their fleece), to identify the traits where improvement was desired, and then sourcing the genetics - via stud matings - to boost those traits in our herd. Our stud males have been awarded Supreme Champion during their show career, confirmation that they carry the traits that are desirable in breeding alpacas that meet the breed standard of the Australian Alpaca Association (AAA).

Big Sky Alpacas is managed by Michelle Malt, who is an active member of the Australian Alpaca Association and the Big Sky herd is managed under the Q-Alpaca Biosecurity Program (Certificate number 07/0221).

Michelle has attended numerous educational workshops, seminars and conferences across Australia and New Zealand, and Alpaca Fiesta (a conference, animal judging and trade event) in Arequipa Peru in 2014, and alpaca shows in the UK and Europe. She has amassed a considerable reference library and a wealth of knowledge about alpacas and the alpaca industry here in Australia and internationally.
