Big Queens Project Open Mic Night: Unmute, Raise The Mic Against Violence
Thank you for visiting the Big Queens Project Open Mic Night (OMN) website; a space created to inform and inspire. Our mission is to connect local high school students, their families, schools, and law enforcement through community open mic events that celebrate youth talent while fostering positive relationships and raising awareness to combat gun violence.
We believe these events are more than just showcases; they are vital opportunities for young people to express themselves creatively and engage in meaningful, productive activities. By hosting these open mics in high schools and involving local police precincts and food vendors, we create an inclusive, safe space where youths can shine in front of their peers and family members. Our goal is to provide an outlet that not only entertains but empowers, offering a safer, more enriching way for youths to spend their time.
At the heart of the Big Queens Project is a commitment to the idea that preventing gun violence is a shared responsibility. We understand that real change comes from collaboration among “at-promise” youth, supportive families, and law enforcement. Through events like our open mic nights, we aim to build trust, nurture creativity, and strengthen community bonds. We are dedicated to playing our part and invite you to join us in making a meaningful difference.
We’re excited to welcome you to our next open mic night; an evening that promises inspiration, connection, and a collective step toward change.
PPA hosted a Teaching A Generation (TAG) event. During the spring 2023 Gun Violence Prevention Taskforce (GVPTF) town halls, young people repeatedly called for NYPD training on engaging with them and their communities.
In response, the mayor pledged that a team from the First Deputy Mayor’s Office, DYCD, NYPD, and the People's Police Academy (PPA) would create a project to build trust and respect between the NYPD and youth.
