Requests for the school to administer medication must be in writing and must include the physician's written instructions, name of medication, dosage, time interval and method of administration. The medication must be in the original container and the container label must clearly show the prescription label. Over the counter medication must be accompanied by the parent’s written instructions and kept in the original container.

• All doors will be locked during the day to ensure the safety of students and staff.

• The north and east wing doors are for exit only. 

• Do not open doors to allow anyone entry to the building. 

• Visitors must sign in at the office window after they are allowed in the front doors.

Students found to have brought, possessed, concealed or used a dangerous or deadly weapon, firearm or destructive device in violation of Board policy shall be expelled for a period of not less than one year. BSD is a Gun-free Zone which extends 1000 feet from the campuses. All other violations of the policy will result in discipline up to and including expulsion and/or referral to law enforcement as appropriate. The Superintendent may, on a case by case basis, modify this expulsion requirement. The district may also request suspension of a student’s driving privileges or the right to apply for driving privileges with the Oregon Department of Transportation, as provided by law.

Under state and federal law, “weapon” is defined as "any weapon, device, instrument, material of substance, which under the circumstances in which it is used, attempted to be used, or threatened to be used, is readily capable of causing death or serious physical injury." Weapons may also include, but not be limited to knives, metal knuckles, straight razors, noxious or irritating gases, poisons or unlawful drugs. Replicas of weapons, fireworks and pocket knives are also prohibited by Board policy.

Parents of a student with communicable or contagious diseases are asked to contact the HLMS office so that other students who may be exposed to the disease can be alerted.  Certain illnesses require exclusion from in person instruction while contagious, including chickenpox, mumps, whooping cough, measles, German measles, scabies, staph infections, strep infections, tuberculosis, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, conjunctivitis (pink eye), ringworm, influenza.  Parents with questions should contact the office.  

All students are required to be in compliance with State of Oregon immunization requirements unless they have a Medical or Non-Medical Exemption properly recorded with the school office.  Any time a student receives a new vaccination, parents need to update the school office to ensure our records are current.  Parents will be notified in writing if immunizations are incomplete or insufficient.  Students who are not immunization compliant may be excluded from school until the necessary immunizations have been obtained and documented. 

Parents are responsible for maintaining up-to-date and accurate contact information through the office.  Should an emergency arise, our school/district will follow standard protocols based on each situation.  Safety drills are held monthly throughout the school year to instruct students in procedures that should be followed in case of fire, earthquake, tsunami, or intruders.

Bandon School District have adopted the ALICE safety protocol.   ALICE is a proactive plan for unexpected safety issues at school and is adapted to consider student age and ability.  Students and staff are trained at the beginning of each school year.  ALICE is not a linear process, but rather a range of options for staff and students to use in a crisis situation.  Materials for presenting information to students will be provided to each classroom to ensure a consistent message is shared with all students and staff.

Bandon School District is implementing School Messenger to communicate with parents in the event of an emergency or school closure.  We also contact parents when the need for student pick-up arises due to illness or significant behavior concerns.   Please keep your contact information up to date with the office to ensure that you receive any notifications necessary, including emergency contacts other than household parents.

Student safety is a top priority at Bandon School District.  Safety instruction is given and practiced in all areas of the school campus.  Please help your student by encouraging them to follow their after school plan directly without unexpected deviations, to never approach strangers or accept rides or gifts from unknown persons, to report suspicious persons loitering on foot or in vehicles near the building, to report any threatening behavior by students or adults immediately to a trusted school employee, and to always communicate with parents about any problem that they may be facing at school or in general.
