Initiation (Diksha)
In the Swaminarayan Sampraday, initiation, also known as Diksha, refers to the process of accepting an individual as a disciple or devotee of Lord Swaminarayan. It is a sacred ceremony in which the individual commits to follow the teachings, principles, and practices of the Swaminarayan Sampraday under the guidance of a spiritual preceptor or guru.
The process of Diksha typically involves the following elements:
Acceptance: The individual expresses their desire to become a disciple and seeks initiation into the Swaminarayan Sampraday. The spiritual preceptor or guru assesses the sincerity and readiness of the individual to undertake the spiritual path.
Pledge and Vows: The person undergoing initiation takes the five vows (previously listed) and pledges to lead a virtuous and disciplined life according to the teachings of Lord Swaminarayan. These vows may include abstaining from engaging in unethical behavior, non-vegetarian food, alcohol, tobacco, and drugs.
Spiritual Name: The guru may bestow a spiritual name upon the disciple, signifying their new identity and connection to the divine.
Blessings and Guidance: The guru provides spiritual blessings, guidance, and instructions to the disciple. This includes imparting spiritual knowledge, teaching the principles and practices of the Swaminarayan Sampraday, and offering guidance on the path of devotion and self-realization.
Disciple-Guru Relationship: Through Diksha, a formal relationship is established between the guru and the disciple. The guru becomes the spiritual guide and mentor, while the disciple submits to the guru's guidance, seeks their advice, and learns from their wisdom.
Initiation (Diksha) is considered a significant milestone in the spiritual journey of a devotee in the Swaminarayan Sampraday. It symbolizes their commitment to following the path of devotion, practicing moral and ethical values, and seeking spiritual growth and enlightenment under the guidance of a realized master. The process of Diksha establishes a deep bond between the guru and disciple, fostering a relationship based on trust, respect, and spiritual transformation.
