What is Sigma Alpha Iota?
Sigma Alpha Iota is an international music fraternity. SAI is specifically designed as an organization that brings music loving women together through sisterhood, exhibition of musical skills, and acts of charitable community service.
Why is SAI a "fraternity" if its members are all women?
SAI was first established in 1903 as a sorority at the University School of Music in Ann Arbor, Michigan. In 1926, the SAI constitution was amended to designate it formally as a fraternity. The word "fraternity" stems from the Latin term "fraternitas" meaning "brotherhood" and can apply to both men's and women's organizations. Today, most Greek music organizations are termed fraternities, regardless of the gender of their members. Furthermore, SAI is inclusive of cisgender women and transgender women. Identities that may be considered for membership also include non-binary, gender nonconforming individuals who are committed to the advancement of women in music.
Do I have to be a music major to join SAI?
No, you do not have to be majoring in music to join SAI. A member can major or minor in any of the programs offered at the Bowling Green State University, and be a sister of the Gamma Omicron Chapter.
If I transfer to a different college or university after I complete my membership with Gamma Omicron, am I still a member of SAI?
Yes. As a member of SAI, if you transfer to a different school with an active SAI chapter, you will become a member of that school's chapter. Because SAI is an international music fraternity, you are a member regardless of where you are. Gamma Omicron welcomes any SAI sisters who have transferred to BGSU from a different school to become active in SAI at BGSU.
Does SAI have a house in Greek Village?
No. Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity (“Fraternity”) has determined as a matter of policy that its chapter members will not live in Fraternity owned, sponsored or affiliated housing. The Fraternity does not maintain insurance coverage for “chapter housing”. While the Fraternity does not inject itself into the living arrangements of its members, the Fraternity does not permit its name or letters to be posted or otherwise visible on any living facility in a way that may imply Fraternity approved housing.
