This is a collaboration project worked on by the students of Global Media Lab, and artist Neve Mazique. Two artists worked with the Global Media Lab students and the students chose which production they wanted to be a part of depending on their interests and relatability to the artist.
While much of my work is geared towards writing, with GLAB, I was able to experience both hands-on production work and writing. I was able to showcase my passion in another form of medium. My poem was read out loud by the artist, Neve, and it was displayed in the background.
This Cento presentation idea notes document is a Cento (collage) poem project assigned by Professor Anida Yeou Ali for BISCLA 380 B Autumn 17 Contemporary Muslim Artists. The class was shown a Cento performance through the award-winning “1700% Project: Mistaken For Muslim" written and performed by Professor Ali. The groups were then told to create a Cento poem compiled from filed hate crime reports against Muslims and those perceived as Muslims. After the written part was done, the groups were assigned to perform their poem.
The group Gud Luv consisted of Victor, Intale, Tiger, and I. This project was hard work because there was a lot of creative direction we had to come up with. It took a lot of effort and planning to meet up outside of class to create this piece. Professor Ali, being an artist themselves, expects quality and genuine effort. I was the director/producer. I put together the sound audio on Audacity to open the performance and during. The part that I had the most difficulty with was memorization. It was performed in front of our class in Husky Hall 1310, where our class regularly occurred. We were lucky to have a spacious room. I remember I froze a bit during my piece. Looking back, I appreciate the production and the undeniable truth it told.
This collage was created for a group Zine project appointed by Dr. Roberts for BIS 224 Introduction to Feminist Studies. The final project was to portray your given group through a zine and they were chosen to represent "Systems of Privilege & Inequality."
My page of the zine was on how you can disrupt white supremacy with art. My research consisted of finding five different artists who defined their way of interrupting white privilege and in turn, I created my page using the complex ways one can disrupt white supremacy and power structures. I submitted this to Clamor as visual art and it was accepted and published in the 2018 Clamor Literary Journal.
Transcript: Black women, caught at the intersections of race and gender, and other identities, are often made to feel that they need to separate their self-hood. Talitha L. LeFlouria, with examples from Sarah Nealy, Mattie Crawford, and William Hudley showcases the complexity of burdens that incarcerated Black women face. In regards to the story of William Hudley and the unnamed Black woman, J.C Powell understood those complexities and used them against the Black woman, and Hudley. With the acknowledgment of misogynoir (misogyny aimed at Black women) Black women’s stories continue to be erased. The intricate ways of being an incarcerated Black woman cause respectability politics to undermine the severe experiences, mental disorders, and medical conditions that they suffer through. These accounts are integral to mass incarceration history. LeFlouria, with her research on gendered violence against southern Black American women, requests that other historians also begin to garner a sufficient archive so that incarcerated Black women do not disappear along with the currently underdeveloped research.
This recording is the summary portion of a group presentation. The students were put into small groups to research an assigned reading. Along with the presentations, the students have to prepare a one to two-page response paper.
This is a recording that I wrote and presented for our group Powerpoint presentation.
This is a case study group analysis from BISLEP 302: Policy Analysis taught by Dr. Keith Nitta. The class was assigned five case studies to practice policy analysis methods presented and discussed in class.
