Our first branch is awareness and encouraging resilience. Psychological resilience is the ability to mentally or emotionally cope with a crisis or to return to pre-crisis status quickly. Resilience is a measure of how much you want something and how much you are willing, and able, to overcome obstacles to get it. It deals with your emotional strength. Some subtopics that fall under are self-awareness, self-regulation, and mental agility variables.
Our second branch talks about mental disorders. Some of those include mood disorders (such as depression or bipolar disorder), anxiety disorders, personality disorders, psychotic disorders (such as schizophrenia), eating disorders and trauma-related disorders. 5 percent of adults (18 or older) experience a mental illness in any one year, equivalent to 43.8 million people. Mental disorders comprise a broad range of problems, with different symptoms.
Our third sector is substance abuse. Substance abuse may sharply increase symptoms of mental illness or even trigger new symptoms. Abuse of alcohol or drugs can also interact with medications such as antidepressants, anti-anxiety pills, and mood stabilizers, making them less effective at managing symptoms. The mental health problems that most commonly co-occur with substance abuse are depression, bipolar disorder, and anxiety disorders. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), 19.7 million American adults (aged 12 and older) battled a substance use disorder in 2017. Almost 74% of adults suffering from a substance use disorder in 2017 struggled with an alcohol use disorder. Some subtopics that will be discussed are addiction, cause and effects of substance abuse, and different types of drugs like stimulants, depressants, opium-related painkillers and hallucinogens.
