The mission of the Beverly Special Education Parent Advisory Council (aka Beverly SEPAC) is to bring together special needs families and school administrators to create dialogue and help direct input on matters related to the Beverly Special Education Program. The SEPAC strives to deepen the partnership between parents* and administrators by identifying issues, working together to implement solutions, and celebrating mutual successes.
*The inclusive view of the term "parents" reflects biological, adoptive, foster parents, guardians, grandparents, and extended family caregivers. The state of Massachusetts mandates in law for school districts to establish a Special Education Parent Advisory Council (SEPAC) to advise the School Committee, the School District, it's officials, without limitation, on the education and safety of students with disabilities. The Beverly SEPAC does not have enforcement or legislative powers, but instead operates by providing guidance, suggestions, feedback, and is to be a consulted sounding board in the decision making process.
to provide direct input on the policies, programs, and practices that affect services and supports for students with disabilities
to increase the involvement of families of children with special needs
to advise on issues that affect the education, health, and safety of students with special needs
No special training or special background knowledge is needed to become a part of the Beverly SEPAC - you just need to have a desire to support others, are working alongside children, or have children of your own on IEPs, 504s, or with special needs. Caregivers with children receiving support services or caregivers who want to learn more about the Special Education program in Beverly are encouraged to attend meetings as are educators (whether currently working with special needs students or not) looking to gain insight into special education needs and how to be an advocate for students. The SEPAC is all of us.
