Public art as a candle in the dark
To raise awareness on critical local issues related to water/energy conservation, public health, and social justice through the beautification of Imperial Valley. Led by local artist, Takito, community members help transform public spaces with five murals in five different cities.
This mural is a representation of how Imperial Valley looks now and how it would look like if we continue with our current water usage. Learn more about this mural and water conservation in Imperial Valley by clicking the image.
Child obesity is rampant in Imperial Valley and the side effects are devastating. This mural's mission is to help raise awareness on Imperial Valley's food access disparities. Learn more about this mural by clicking the image.
Moving away from mining Non-Renewable to Renewable resources is an inevitable process. Lithium Valley is an example of how much impact such a change can have on a disinvested community. Learn more about local efforts to avoid our region becoming a sacrifice zone by fighting for community benefits agreements.
Taking care of our minds is as important as taking care of our bodies. Mental health is evolving into more holistic treatments. Instead of focusing on disease symptoms, the focus is the person as a whole (emotionally, physically, mentally, spiritually, and socially). Learn more about the 8 aspects of mental health throught this vibrantly colored mural.
Bilingual education is unnecessarily controversial in our community. Research has shown that receiving an education that includes your native language is key for future success. Far too often personal and political ideologies get in the way of children's education. This mural's purpose is to celebrate language diversity in Imperial Valley.
Images of the murals will be displayed at the Steppling Art Gallery. Seeking collaboration with fellow FSBN grant recipients to showcase their process with me.
