Academic Mentoring
Over my career, I have mentored several secondary and post-secondary students and emergent scholars who are seeking to navigate their academic and career trajectories in ways that honor their efforts, voices, and goals. My mentoring has been specifically targeted towards first generation college students, graduate students, and women of color in the academy at all levels, to support moving away from feelings of imposter syndrome and self-doubt and towards understanding the unique voices and contributions my mentees have to make across various academic spaces.
I draw from people's passions to connect their academic goals with authentic opportunities for growth. I have supported mentees through post-secondary and graduate school application processes, through extensive mentoring in academic writing, and through navigating the job search and tenure track process. Below are quotes from some of my previous mentees. Individual coaching/ academic mentoring sessions are available upon inquiry.
" Dr. Hsieh has been generous with her time and deeply empathetic towards me as a first-generation doctoral student. She not only understands that unfamiliarity with the academy does not equate to a lack of potential, she structures opportunities for me as a caregiver to make progress in my work as I maintain my practical responsibilities. Being mentored by Dr. Hsieh feels to me like having acquired a great friend, because I have!" -- Tasha, Assistant Professor
"Dr. Hsieh has shown me what teaching from the heart looks like. Not only does she provide me with the inspiration to teach, advocate, and support my future students, but she also provides me with practical tools and resources that take me further than I ever thought I could." -- Bianca, Secondary English Teacher
"Dr. Hsieh has been my mentor and friend for over 10 years, from supporting me during my undergraduate years to helping me navigate applying and interviewing for faculty positions. She is deeply invested in my growth and development, helping me recognize my potential and overcome imposter syndrome. Dr. Hsieh has helped me break down goals into manageable smaller goals, making it possible for me to accomplish those goals. She provides me with honest and direct feedback while being sensitive to my feelings. After every meeting, I feel more elevated and empowered. I admire her dedication and commitment to supporting her mentees and creating opportunities for underserved communities. I feel extremely blessed to have her as my mentor and friend!" -- Erika, Adjunct Faculty Member
"Betina has been instrumental to my success thus far on the academic job market. There’s an entire hidden curriculum that as a first generation college student and woman of color from a nascent PhD program, I was not privy to. Betina has helped me every step of the way from deciding which schools to apply to all the way to job talk preparations. She also has an extensive network that has opened so many doors for me not only in the job market, but also future collaborations and research opportunities. The best part about her mentoring is how she does all this with love, humor, and grace."
-- Rosa, Assistant Professor
