A word search is an easy-to-create, playful activity that can be used to introduce a new topic, review previously learned material or summarise a unit. Students can not only solve the puzzle but also create it themselves. As a result, they already need to consider the most important concepts of the topic while compiling the word list.
In this activity, students collect words and expressions related to a particular topic and use them to create a word search puzzle for their classmates. The task can support:
the activation of prior knowledge;
the development and clarification of subject-specific vocabulary;
the identification of key concepts;
the recognition of connections between concepts;
the development of spelling and visual scanning skills;
independent and collaborative learning.
On its own, a word search primarily supports the recognition and recall of terms. It is therefore advisable to combine finding the words with further meaning-focused activities, such as writing definitions, categorising concepts, providing examples or explaining relationships between the terms.
When reviewing a topic, or even before introducing a new one, students are asked to collect the most important words and expressions connected to the subject at home.
If the topic is entirely new, it is helpful to provide students with a starting resource, such as a textbook chapter, a short informative text, a video or a reliable website. This turns the task from simple guessing into guided preliminary research.
Students can create their own puzzle using the Lexiq Word Search Maker. The platform allows users to enter their chosen words and adjust the grid size, word directions and level of difficulty. The completed word search can be saved as an image or text file, printed, and accompanied by a separate answer key.
One or more odd-one-out terms can also be included in the word list. These may appear to be connected to the topic but differ from the other terms in a particular way. Odd-one-out words become especially useful when students are later required to explain why they consider them different.
Before completing the puzzle, it is advisable to check:
whether the subject-specific terms are spelled correctly;
whether all the words are relevant to the topic;
whether the word list is an appropriate length;
how multi-word expressions appear in the puzzle;
whether an answer key is available.
The completed word searches are distributed among the students. If possible, no student should receive their own puzzle.
The list of hidden words is not provided. Students therefore need to rely both on their visual observation and on their knowledge of the topic.
Each student writes down the words and expressions they find.
Students compare their answers in pairs or small groups.
The class checks the terms together, clarifies their meanings and discusses how they are connected to the topic.
If an odd-one-out term has been included, students identify it and justify their choice.
The activity can also be organised as a competition, but speed should not be the only consideration. Additional points can be awarded for accurate definitions, appropriate categorisation or the recognition of relationships between concepts.
A word search reviewing the topic of functions might include the following terms:
coordinate system;
zero or root;
range;
domain;
parabola;
hyperbola;
extreme value;
decreasing;
monotonic;
even;
odd;
discriminant.
After finding the words, students can complete further tasks:
Categorise the terms, for example into properties of functions, types of graphs and concepts used when analysing functions.
Choose three concepts and explain their meanings in their own words.
Find two closely connected terms and justify their choice.
Draw a function that has several of the listed properties.
Choose an odd one out and support the answer with mathematical reasoning. More than one answer can be accepted if the explanation is mathematically correct.
The difficulty of the activity can easily be adapted to the students’ age, prior knowledge and individual needs.
For students who require more support:
provide the list of hidden words;
give the first letter or number of letters in each word;
provide short definitions of the terms;
use a smaller grid and fewer word directions;
organise the activity as pair work.
For students who progress more quickly:
do not provide the word list in advance;
hide words in several directions, including backwards;
ask students to write definitions, examples or counterexamples;
have them create a concept map using the terms;
ask them to select and justify their own odd one out;
have them create a word search containing a hidden message.
Word searches can be used in almost every school subject. In language lessons, they can support vocabulary revision. In history, they can be used to organise people, events and places. In science subjects, they can help students recall subject-specific terminology, while in literature they can be used to collect concepts related to authors and literary works.
The activity can be completed individually, in pairs or in groups. When working in groups, students must decide together which concepts are the most important. This means that even compiling the word list requires subject-related discussion, decision-making and collaboration.
The task can also be used as an exit ticket or a quick end-of-lesson review. In this case, students select one of the words they have found and briefly explain what they learned about it during the lesson.
A word search is an easy-to-create and flexible activity that can make the introduction of a new topic and the organisation of previously acquired knowledge more engaging. One of its particular strengths is that students can take on the role of both puzzle solvers and puzzle creators.
The method supports learning most effectively when finding the words is not the end of the activity but the beginning of further content-based work. By interpreting, categorising and applying the concepts, a simple puzzle can be transformed into a meaningful and thought-provoking learning task.
