Troop 233

Troop 233 has been an active troop since 1965, and meets at the Concord-St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Bethesda, MD. We are composed of boys from Bethesda and the surrounding area, and are part of the National Capital Area Council, which includes the DC metro area. Troop 233 is youth-led. The Scouts, through their elected leaders (Senior Patrol Leader and Patrol Leaders), are in charge of deciding upon, planning and carrying out their activities. Adult leaders counsel, advise and guide the Junior Leaders. Except when health or safety is an issue, adults do not direct activities in the way adults do in Cub Scouts. Scouting is a unique organization because 10 and 11 year olds participate side by side with 16 and 17 year olds. This range of ages gives older scouts the opportunity to develop leadership skills, and provides role models to younger scouts.

Meetings

Troop meetings are typically held on Monday nights from 7:30-8:30pm in the social hall at Concord-St. Andrews United Methodist Church on River Road.

Camping

We camp out at least once per month throughout the year. Our program is selected by the Scouts and changes annually, but often includes backpacking, camping at historic battlefields, Potomac District's Klondike Derby, camping in survival shelters, cabin camping, and a variety of other adventures. We will often incorporate a monthly day event as well, which might be a hike, ski trip, or service project. In the summer our program centers around a week-long scout camp and high adventure opportunities for older boys.

GOSHEN SUMMER CAMP

Every year, the troop spends a week at Camp Marriott at the Goshen Scout Reservation. This is one of the highlights of the year. Scouts can learn climbing, shooting, archery, boating and water sports, camping skills and earn a wide variety of Merit Badges. Scouts will cook for themselves (food provided) and enjoy events such as pirates breakfast on the lake, campfires, and evening activities.
