Jobs for the week
Deadheading flowers: we are removing as many spent flowers and seed pods as possible, to encourage more flowering. Later in the season we’ll let some of them go to seed, so that they’ll self-seed for next year.
Harvesting flowers: most of the flowering plants have hit their stride, and it's time to spread the wealth. The more flowers we pick, the more flowers we'll get; plants will put their energy into making more flowers instead of producing seeds
Special projects
We have dug out an area for a pond, but have not installed it. If you have experience with pond construction, we would appreciate borrowing your expertise. Contact us at bethelgardenfriends@gmail.com. Thanks

The cauliflower has run its course, but the broccoli is nearly ready to cut.
Herbs: most of them are ready to harvest.
For basil, shiso, mint other and plants with similar growth patterns, an example of how to cut them is shown in the picture. Cut just above a node, leaving at least 2/3 of the stem (usually the first or second node from the top).
For most other herbs, cut to the base of the piece you’re taking. Cut as much as you need, but leave at least 2/3 of the plant to encourage regrowth.
Parsley is an exception; it will regrow if it is entirely cut back to an inch from the ground.
Lovage is a cool weather herb- it’s flavor is largely gone by the end of May.
Flowers: they need to be harvested. The more they are harvested, the more flowers we’ll get.
