Human Behavioral Observation
For this human behavioral observation method, the coding method I used was the partial interval method, which is when the behavior that is being observed will get a tally if/when it occurs during any part of the interval at all.
The behavior I observed was how often the person used their phone while studying or doing work on their laptop. This behavior could have been them physically picking up their phone or it could have been them tapping the screen of their phone to check their notifications. I tallied this behavior in 5-minute intervals for an hour. So, if the person picked up their phone or tapped their screen within the 5-minute interval they were given one tally.
Within the hour I observed this person, they were not given a tally in the first 5-minute interval. They were given a tally in the 10-minute interval, 15-minute interval, 25-minute interval, 30-minute interval, 35-minute interval, 40-minute interval, 55-minute interval, and 60-minute interval.
A weakness of using the partial interval method as a coding method is the sole fact that the behavior may occur more than once in a specific interval but it is only able to be given one tally.
