Beaver Activity

The beaver dam is back and higher than ever.

A significant portion of the stream is now flowing directly into the field, over the berm. I can no longer get to the other side of the field.

Wetland Animals

I finally got a good photo of a frog. Now that it is colder perhaps the frogs are slower. This frog kept blending in and hiding in dark places. Eventually, it hopped into the water.

When I first saw this animal it was stationary, like a statue. Obviously, it had seen me first. I also froze and started counting seconds. After 200 seconds the animal came alive and moved further away from me, staying on this log.

From the photo on the right we can see a rat-like tail. Therefore, this is a nutra, not a beaver. The other clue is that beavers are not out in the middle of the day.

The nutra was enjoying the sun while grooming.

The beaver has eaten all of the bark on this log. The nutra eats lots of plants. Up to 25% of its weight in plants each day, according to Wikipedia.
