In 1986, four ISMTA chapters established the Berkley-Pendell Scholarship Fund to honor Helen Berkley and Verona Pendell, founders of the original West Suburban chapter of ISMTA which was located in Wheaton, Illinois, a Chicago suburb.
The Fund is currently supported by the Naperville, Salt Creek, and Waubonsee and West Suburban ISMTA chapters and by donations from individuals and other supporters. As 501(c)3 groups, all donations to the Berkley-Pendell Fund are tax-deductible.
The purpose of our scholarship fund, annual piano competition, and festival is to promote the cause of great music and foster emerging musical artistry and excellence. The participating chapters jointly sponsor the competition and festival for students of active members.
All participating students receive comments from expert judges which they can use to enhance their musical growth. Competition winners are asked to perform at the Celebratory Concert where additional awards are given. Competition winners also receive cash prizes. Judges will also recommend outstanding Festival-level performers to play at the Celebratory Concert.
