*I recommend reading this after you have read about the characters and relationships first.
This is just information on older iterations of Berkembang if you're interested in reading about them. You don't need to know any of this to understand the current information!
This is definitely the oldest version of the story, so its contents are probably typical of what you'd expect from a 12 year old, but alas, I must come clean with my creation. Last time I had edited this document was likely in 2022, but my biggest inspirations behind this work were likely Hannibal (NBC) and likely a mix of other American TV shows and 80s movies such as Karate Kid, Heathers, Beetlejuice, etc.
But that's beside the point, I was very interested in creating a compelling story, and while I believe I did hit the nail right in some areas, some not so much, and I feel like I bit off far more than I could chew... that likely contributed to me completely rehashing the plot and characters, making them a bit more likable. I began treating them more like I was critiquing characters written for a show.
(For the sake of convenience I'm going to be referring to the characters via their old names. There's a list below if you're interested!)
Johannes Harper (Lestari Angkiat)
Viktoria Moore (Zakariah Guywei)
Johnathan Giovanni IV (X)
Gerald Walker Lawrence (Amalgam)
Oliver Sully (Qaadir Siddiqui)
Melanie Kershaw (Māyuri, Nazneen Dudina)
Rafael (Rafael Flores)
Maria (Maria Flores)
Indah
Maimun
Efren Reyes
Zarina Izzah
Damin
Hassan
Suriati
Khatija Binti Noor
Liem
There was a council of supernaturals that were meant to represent human concepts and guard several sectors of the planet, thus giving them different human appearances and cultures.
There is a set heaven, hell, and purgatory in this story, which doesn't exist anymore because Berkembang is all about uncertainty and tangbility.
Viktoria was a model and/or a lawyer I can't remember which one now, and an alcoholic. (Guywei does drink though he's no longer one!)
Rafael was a recluse compared to his life (death?) now, and his daughter would proceed to live until the current timeline and remember Viktoria.
Johannes had the ability to destroy anything with physical touch but she couldn't control this. Oh yes and it turns out she was God in the end too, how typical is that?
The characters were living in California, but most of Viktoria's life was actually led outside of there, and he wanted to erase his identity off the papers (which makes the idea of his career more redundant.)
Johannes is actually a classically trained pianist, compared to Lestari who is a self taught pianist who plays on a shoddy keyboard and can barely read sheet music. Johannes' surname was also a pun, because it would be revealed that she could play the harp too.
Viktoria would get his missing eye back, as it was kept safe in an archive for contract reasons.
Gerald and Viktoria would be revealed to be biologically related at one point, but I had then decided to scrap that idea as it was too predictable.
While there is a timeline in the document I still think a short summary could give you an idea of how the story was meant to go. Or at least what little bits and pieces I could hardly tape together. The story was a complete mess as in, it was barely coherent or entertaining. But I have to say without it, would Berkembang exist? Who nose...
(1917) Gerald and Phillip (an old holder of the soul that would inhabit Johannes) would meet. Gerald kills him, his paranoia grows thus he proceeds to kill anyone he suspects knows, goes to hell, and gets in a rehabilitation program.
(1954) The big year! Rafael meets Viktor and they go fishing. Rafael tells Viktor he is going to die because his soul told him so (yes the same one Phillip had) so he makes Viktor his successor, leaving his worldly possessions to Viktor. Once Gerald kills Rafael as well out of envy, Viktor sends him back to hell and proceeds to live in the church with Rafael's daughter, Maria and the Reverend (likely influenced Efren's creation) until 1961.
(1961) Viktor leaves, not wanting to weigh his mind down more and causing harm to the church, and left without a choice, continues to fend demons off. He proceeds to pursue medical studies but I'm assuming due to lack of funds, he never completes them and quickly falls into drinking. Theseus (a council-member) is interested in his activity.
(1972) Viktor runs into Oliver and his group, which is good at first, but it makes his issues worse, but it's the only place he can find shelter in currently. He gets into a romantic relationship with a group member, Lyndia Fusilo, who is working with Oliver on a secret business which Viktor finds out about.
(1974) They get found out by everyone else and kicked out, Lyndia dies of mysterious circumstances, and Viktor is on the verge of hospitalization. He becomes increasingly more frustrated with the direction his life is taking.
(1979) Johannes gets hospitalized at the age of 11, falling into a coma. However, she remains clueless about her life prior for the remainder of the story, and just adapts to living life without knowledge of what it was like, however it does bother her a bit at times.
(1988) Johannes and Viktor meet here, and after that, their whole life just starts crashing downwards. Johannes realizes her skin is shedding, transforming, one or the other, and Viktor is noticing an uptick in demonic presence in his life. He has no choice but to tell Johannes the truth as it seems these two things are inextricably linked, and it can be drawn all the way back to that coma and 1954.
There was an alternate timeline following the antagonists, but it's pretty short so I'll give a brief summary. After Gerald got sent back to hell, he is locked up for eternity, because the tasks strictly forbid demons from killing on their time on Earth. Johnathan finds him though, and takes him under his wing to serve him.
This started during 2022, where, ironically, I was going to kill off all the characters from AC and never touch or expand upon them again because I felt like they had absolutely no potential or whatever potential they did have was just me riding the coattails of nostalgia, making them virtually useless. So I decided to draw them one last time in the Valentine's day drawing featured, but then I realized. Wow. Just what if they were Asian? And basically the rest is history, but for the sake of that history I will explain myself yet again and the timeline of development of BAKSO! had.
They were now all Asian! At least nationality-wise.
Rafael became a charming and (generally) well-liked fella. Not to mention, he also became more of a well-rounded character altogether because at first he just... kind of dies. He also just does kind of die in BAKSO! but at least he goes out in style.
Of course the biggest change is that it no longer takes place in California, and instead, Selangor.
Surprisingly, most of the main characters were actually aged down to become teenagers, and some were separated into being side characters (Aka The Band).
Only one member of the aforementioned council exists now! Not really, the others do, but I wanted to just focus on one of them here.
Lestari luckily doesn't destroy anything with touch now, but she has to share a body with Rafael. And this genuinely caused me a lot of problems, because I was at writing level 2 at this point, I wasn't sure how I would make this work while maintaining Lestari as the main character. (I scrapped this concept for Berkembang.)
Guywei is now a single man, NOT ready to mingle.
Initially, the story sort of served as a test run, due to the fact that I basically just killed the previous iteration of the characters with my iron ruling fist, so I was really just rolling in the sand and seeing what would stick to the body. And even though there was so so many plot holes that I found within, I'm grateful for its existence because I ended up rockin' the things I found an issue with out of the story. But also, as a completely seperate side tangent, I hated how loved Rafael Flores was. Like, people were all over him and I had to do something about it!! And made him more unlikeable, or just bad as a person. And while I will admit that was done out of hatred at first, it paid off storytelling wise!
Since I have already talked about the plot crumbling, let's discuss the characters. They were rewritten to be given fresh new coats, and they were much stronger of course, but when it came time for me to connect them together and to the environment it just felt like a bunch of crayons thrown onto a piece of paper. Lestari stayed relatively the same, as she's optimistic about life and all of the opportunities that present themselves to her, but now she's a child, so it just feels much more overbearing for her. Oh but she has friends now!! Which of course, is one friend. Which is Mayūri, who is definitely NOT as optimistic about life as she is. I wouldn't say she was a pessimist but she was more of a realist when it came to the grand scheme of things. Now I feel like I had slapped their personalities from this iteration to how they are currently. Now Guywei, not much has changed I cannot lie, he is just too good to change majorly, but the biggest thing is his relationship with Lestari. Now he's much older than her, and Guywei does NOT like talking with children, but I think he'd dote on her as if she was his own child over the course of the story and afterwards. The rest of the cast was slightly underdeveloped, but I did introduce Liem during this time, and I wish that the purpose I've given him here ends up paying off. He kind of acts like a mom to Lestari, constantly nagging her, telling her this, telling her that, just saying it's all for the best, even though he's unsure if he believes that himself, but overall while the audience only sees him in his relation to Lestari, he definitely is his own person and has time to show that. When however... wait and see....
Finally, as to why I wanted to change the story so drastically? I already addressed this earlier but I wanted to understand the culture of Southeast Asia better, both socially and politically even though I admittedly still have a lot of research to do, especially on the topics the story covers, or things that affect the characters and their current environment. Considering the year it takes place in as well, 1997, it takes intentional searching for old sources and most importantly of all, finding sources written by Malaysians themselves, I don't think I can stress that enough if anyone who is reading this wants to create a story that takes place anywhere in the world. And make sure you get people who live there to read your stuff! Trust me, it will make you see things you're not so sure you saw in the first place!
