*All characters based on the information given here are up to interpretation of readers. For the sake of the fact that this is written in English as well, I listed English pronouns.
The major cast, but some play a larger role than others. The story is told through Lestari who is an unintentionally unreliable narrator but we get no direct insight into her thoughts via words unless verbally expressed by her. And for all characters, major and supporting, all information written here is prone to change over the story and all information here is not the definitive complete information that exists on these characters.
*Please note that even if Malaysian is not included in their ethnicity doesn’t mean the characters don’t consider themselves that.
Characters who are not necessarily part of a bigger group/clump of characters and or cast, but doesn’t mean they’re uninvolved with other characters.
Lestari Angkiat - 16 Chinese Indonesian
(she/her)
Born in Medan, soon to live in Klang since she was a toddler, Lestari lives life simply and generally liked by her peers through following her idea of their expectations. But in reality, she is much more rigid and blunt than people expect, indulging in niche interests and ideas that clash with others, even with the band that she formed herself. Lestari begins to be more introspective after these clashes, but it's not until she has to consciously exist as every iteration of herself that she realizes her thin veil of reality tearing reveals the brutal truth of her identity and fate, but she believes it can be challenged, so she does so, for the worlds and people she exists within and around.
Languages: Bahasa Melayu, English, & Medan Hokkien (Family-only)
Beliefs: Lestari believes it is much easier to see things through the lens of objects, both manmade and natural. Human beings are much more connected to constructs and locations than some realize, and she believes people take this connection with artwork and nature for granted. She believes a person’s character is determined by their own scales of measuring, and that everyone has the right to their own lifestyle, but that there are flaws in every one of them, however those flaws are only natural, and while humans can improve on them, flaws and complexities will continue to evolve with a person. Lestari believes this evolution is inevitable, thus violence, hatred, and things along those lines, including the inverse, inevitably will occur despite human beings' awareness and advancements, because humans cannot be aware of all in one moment.
Abilities: Lestari does have abilities, albeit out of her control, but she is conscious as every single iteration of herself, in every timeline, both mentally and physically. And depending on the lives of her other iterations, she’s capable of utilizing the rules and memories of that universe to her advantage in intelligence, physical combat, and agility (But as you can imagine, it is very difficult to try and maintain a proper sequence of action when she is everything all the time). *She holds their memories but she only sees them from an outsider’s view, she has no access to the emotions attached to the memories.
Creative Development: Initially, I wanted Lestari to be the prime example of a protagonist, but she kept falling flat that way. Her optimism didn’t help and wasn’t necessary for her character, but it was all that I made her hold on to for a while before abandoning the idea that it was what made her the main character. Going towards a more pessimistic/realistic mindset ended up fitting the story much better, and ironically made her more unique amongst her peers. Lestari also falls into her mind splitting in all infinite ways, seeing as, you know, she rips the fabric of reality unintentionally, but even as it makes an interesting plot, the introspection provided by her situation makes her character a deep cut for a human being as she no longer has access to what she has attached herself to as a person.
Fun Fact: Lestari isn't fond of sugarcoating things, but she also doesn't like hurting people's feelings through honesty, thus she confides in her brother Liem the most about matters concerning her personal life and relationships.
Zakariah Guywei (2) - 53 Papuan Malaysian ☪
(he/him)
Raised in the capital, Kuala Lumpur, Guywei was a man who had dreams and ideas of being in social services, however, he grew more cynical with society as he grew older and became bitter and duller towards corruption in society. He feels as if it's unfair that many opportunities were denied to him based on his physical appearance, the changes to it which he had no control over, but he also feels no point in dwelling on it any further. Deciding to pursue epidemiology, which he still has a license for today, but no longer retains a career in, Guywei instead currently spends his time as a fishmonger in the markets of Klang. Guywei’s life has always been uneasy for himself, but he feels to owe it to himself to keep living, and to pursue his desires and passions at heart.
Career: Fishmonger, and former Epidemiologist
Languages: Bahasa Melayu, English, Malaysian Hokkien, Arabic
Beliefs: Guywei believes that human beings are easily corruptible, and that it’s only natural for humans to lean into their desires of pleasure, but it is the challenging of this desire that determines a person’s character. He leans into seeing the bigger image of situations, always predicting the potential consequences of his actions. Guywei also believes that before he can confide in God for answers, he often has to do the best he can with his knowledge and ability to sharpen his worldly judgement, but there are exceptions to this.
Abilities: Guywei has the ability to possess several iterations of himself (maximum is 4 at a time) however he rarely does this. Instead he takes advantage to study his ability to temporarily warp matter, curious if this is his own, or the “original” Guywei’s ability.
Creative Development: Nikkii has helped by giving Guywei his first name. Similar to Lestari, he’s undergone so many changes, but not so much in his personality and rather in his appearance. I always planned for Guywei to be cynical of the world around him, but his reasons have changed over time as I asked myself the question “Is this enough to deter someone from society?” And as the world changes, so will his personality. That goes for all characters, but Guywei always dealt with much more serious topics in his character, making him much more sensitive to the changes as a character. It’s never a bad thing though, I think characters like Guywei that grapple with social issues in a population and moral dilemmas are necessary for a dimensional story. Speaking of, Guywei grows to be hyper aware of the social structures that surround him, which made him a character that took extensive research for, he’s been living for quite a while as you can imagine haha, but it taught me quite a lot and contributed to my writing and handling of his character. I think of him similar to Kenzou Tenma from Monster, I mean, both of them are framing a young man they knew from decades ago. And funny story, the reason his surname is Guywei is because while trying to name him, his last name was Wei, so as a placeholder name I simply just referred to him as “Guy Wei” and it stuck. That's a little humorous after my seriousness!
Fun Fact: He can’t bring himself to truly hate, but he is capable of holding incredible grudges against others, and I mean long-lasting incredible ones that are the epitome of dedication.
Mayūri L. - 17 Tamil Malaysian ☸︎
(she/her)
Since she was a child, Mayūri took interest in her father’s career in Port Klang, consistently following or being beside him on duty, and she yearns to know if there’s suspicious action truly taking place on the port, or if she’s living in this daydream of becoming a detective of a case. She attempts to take the role of a white knight, but her growing fears of reality grounds her in the situation as she gets involved with a situation where she bit off more than she could chew. Her lack of understanding of the gravity of the situation forces her to grow her own personalized set of survival/technical skills and knowledge as she accepts the uncertainty that she might not make it back to her own world.
Languages: Bahasa Melayu, English, & Tamil
Beliefs: Everything happens for a reason, and that is how Mayūri lives life, if she can in the moment, she takes every action she does with sharpened intention, and takes in information like a sponge. Even if she disagrees with something occurring, she 100% believes it has a reason for its existence. Mayūri is also a big believer of following one's intuition in most scenarios, and that one should trust their gut if they feel one way or another, though she begins changing this approach as she grows.
Abilities: Mayūri can travel through realities as herself, however she cannot see the pathway and she can only have a singular consciousness. If she doesn’t exist within one reality, the version of herself that she exists as currently will carry through into that reality as excess matter, or reject her transmission. But if she does, she will temporarily possess the body of herself that exists in that universe, but she has no access to their memories.
Creative Development: While creating Mayūri, she was initially meant to be a foil to Guywei, but things changed and as she became increasingly younger and uninvolved with him through development, I decided I really wanted her to reflect Lestari. At the start of this new development, she was the pessimistic and reserved one, but I decided to create this sort of “self-employed white knight” of her, realizing how one dimensional some of my character’s interactions were, and that these two opposites clashed so harshly it would be for me to force these flat concepts of personalities to get along. Similar to Guywei as well, I didn’t want to write her in a way that followed stereotypes of Tamil girls and women, or a stereotypical South Asian character, (in Guywei’s case this is about Melanesia) but I also didn’t want to disregard the class and race social structure set up in Malaysia, so I often dragged inspiration from Tamil Malaysian fictional media while also trying to create a character who grew up in a society that was race and class intense, however coming to realize the effects of this society as she became older. I digress, as while Mayūri gets heavily involved with Lestari, she is still her own character, ultimately making conflicts between her and others the most interesting to write.
Fun Fact: She hopes to get an education in New Zealand or Australia in the future, and pursue a career in the medical field, but meeting Lestari again, she feels conflicted on moving.
Qaadir Siddiqui - 51 Punjabi ☪
(he/him)
Once living in Kuala Lumpur as Guywei’s roommate, he attended the same school as him, however ended up pursuing molecular genetic biology and forensic science instead, and worked with Guywei for a while before parting ways, understanding Guywei’s frustration with the corrupt society, but believing there is not a lot that could be done about how it stood. Qaadir tries to find Guywei again for professional help once he comes across several corpses with organisms foreign found inside.
Career: Forensic Pathologist
Languages: Bahasa Melayu, English, Punjabi
Beliefs: He always believes that the best possible outcome will make its way through no matter what, and that more people should have an optimistic outlook on life, even if some solutions take years to be implemented. Qaadir is easily nerved by uncertainties, but he accepts it as part of life, and he believes that if more people embraced the unknown, we would all be a little kinder.
Character Development: When I created him, he was a love interest for Guywei, but that was quickly thrown out the window, because if he existed solely for that reason, well, he really would be quite boring… Now I don’t think there was anything wrong about him being a love interest, but let me be clear, writing romantic relationships? Difficult! And the primary focus here is definitely not romance, but it’s okay don’t get the wrong idea. Who he is now was definitely a major decision influenced by the fact that the story moved from Los Angeles in America to Klang in Malaysia. Like the others, I changed his name. I didn’t list their old names so let me do it here haha! Lestari was Johannes for a long time, Zakaria Guywei was Viktoria for an even LONGER time, and Mayūri was Melanie Kershaw. But let’s not forget Qaadir, his name was Oliver for the short time that “Oliver” existed. But with this new iteration of him, I wanted him to be less independent on Guywei for his development, so I decided to let him develop without him.
Fun Fact: He likes his job, but above all he likes training assistants.
Mostly Lestari’s adversaries but they have effect and motivations on other characters/worlds in the cast, meaning they are not necessarily villains or bad people by default.
Zarina Izzah - 22-50 Malaysian
(Any pronouns or gendered terms)
Prior to her current situation, Zarina was a nationalist who was attempting to improve the reputation of Malaysia via studies in STEM, more specifically, the disparity of gravity in areas of the city of KL, and the potential for a rift in the world. However, when she’s denied funding for her research, she begins pursuing this discovery on her own which would eventually lead her to witness the demise of her mentor and potentially her world via extrinsic encroachment. Forcing Zarina to leave, she takes the initiative to put everything back together again.
Career: Former scientific assistant
Languages: Bahasa Melayu, English
Beliefs: Zarina believes that human beings are highly adaptable, and that mankind should be more willing to abandon certain ideas to build upon them as things are susceptible and are bound to change, both socially and environmentally. Possibilities shouldn’t be limited to people’s attachments to certain values, constructs, or rules, and while it’s completely natural to feel attached to those things, Zarina believes that mankind shouldn’t hold on too hard to preexisting customs. Zarina doesn’t view attachments as a bad or weak thing, but pushing back against the idea that things won’t or shouldn’t change is what she sees as harmful. She doesn’t think that humans should be idle during change, and that acting against or for change is part of a natural process.
Abilities: Because she’s (assumedly) the only version of herself that exists in every reality, she simply exists as excess matter in that reality with her original form, which makes adaptation to every reality’s rules strenuous. She is also able to carry items from reality to reality, regardless of if its existence breaks the laws of the target reality, an ability exclusive to her.
Creative Development: Nikkii has helped create Zarina’s name. Strictly created with the vision of making her a major villain, unlike most of the other cast who start out as supporting characters created to be paired with another character then work their way into branching off as individuals with larger roles. Creating her was fun, but also challenging, as it was a different developmental process than I’m typically used to, but it served as a good change of pace. It also helped that a majority of the characters were already existing prior to her being created, as it was easier for me to build her beliefs and behaviors in an interesting way compared to other characters. However, because Zarina was created with no specific character in mind to accompany, placing her initially was quite difficult, but the process worked out, as in the end she stood out. But, if I were to pair her with one character, it would definitely be Guywei (2), their interactions are just so rich.
Fun Fact: Zarina hates franchise foods, and instead favors local cuisine.
Nazneen Dudina - 34 Malaysian ☪
(she/her)
Nazneen in her pursuit to help people, pursues a career in the medical field, with a broad goal trying to resolve wide scale issues within the field, earning her some criticisms from her peers for being unrealistic in her goals. Similar to Guywei, Nazneen grew more cold with society as she grew, and believes that the expectation from others that society should live in equity is unrealistic, as she believes that society must accept its flaws and respect them first before trying to change something they don’t understand. However, as she begins isolating herself, her image of an “ideal society” begins to distort, leaving Nazneen compassionate, yet reluctant to criticism of her ideas. Nazneen has been trained in pencak silat for half a decade, but her uses of it go from defensive to offensive, even possessing weapons.
Career: Biomedical Engineer
Languages: Bahasa Melayu, English, Arabic
Beliefs: Nazneen believes every single person has the right to believe and practice what they want, without pushback from others, and more so the government, and if someone's freedom is threatened, they have the right to fight back for it. She also believes that people have the right to their physical and mental needs without charge. Nazneen does have her own ideological reservations, but in general she believes that society as a whole should have freedom of expression. She wants to know all there is to know about people and the world, but she knows it is impossible. Nazneen often has trouble honing in on individuals over the bigger image.
Creative Development: Nikkii helped by giving Nazneen her full name. She was a branch off of the character “Melanie” as well, but she ended up more different than Mayūri, and I’m satisfied with that. I wanted to create a morally dubious character, especially of a Muslim woman, as a lot of their depictions are usually lighthearted and bubbly, which there is nothing wrong with, I just like variety. A main component of her character is to grapple with society’s idea of Islam and her own relationship with it, and with this comes society’s expectations of who she’s meant to be. However, another important part of her character is her political ideas and opening her mind to how Malaysia’s policies affect others who are different than hers. Despite being labelled as an antagonist, I didn’t write her with the intention to be malicious, she’s doing what she believes is right, and while she’s not a good person, she’s not a bad person either.
Fun Fact: She wants to write a children’s book, but she hasn’t had the time to do so.
Rafael Flores - Deceased at 22 Filipino
(he/him)
(she/her) as Lestari.
Previously a father and an aspiring scholar in agricultural sciences with a specific interest in agroecology prior to dying, but like Guywei, he was also a fishmonger for the time being. Rafael was generally liked, however his opinions and theories were controversial amongst fellow scientists and peers alike, thus those topics were avoided when talking to him. Rafael’s death is a topic of heavy debate, as it’s unknown if he was killed by someone or something. However, when he breaks the boundary of the plane he is meant to exist on, it’s clear that even decades later, he has business he wants to finish, eager to get back into contact with the connections he had while alive, but the personal interests of someone else begin to warp his actions.
Career: Fishmonger, aspiring Agroecologist
Languages: Bisaya, Spanish, English
Beliefs: Rafael believes that in the same way where everyone is capable of goodwill, they are also capable of evildoing to the same degree, and there exists virtually no boundary that stops someone from crossing that line. He believes that if we consistently and consciously try to lean on one side of the pendulum, artificial values will begin to consume mankind’s ideas, and they act only because they know it is morally acceptable, yet they do not understand why, and that is a fatal flaw that can hinder people from understanding one another.
Abilities: Rafael can shift between planes of existence, however, Rafael no longer has the ability to possess or be other iterations of himself as he’s dead.
Character Development: Rafael was always meant to die, but the reason has changed a lot… and I mean A LOT! It went from happening because Guywei has to realize something via his death, to happening because Raffy is some kind of power beast, to now! Which if I’m honest, I’m not so sure I know now either. But like all my other characters, I didn’t create him for nothing, I wanted to represent another point of view, which so happened to be of post-WW2 in Southeast Asia, and for Rafael, a survivor, I wanted him to be most optimistic (yet also realistic) towards social advancements. Ironic, because after his death, Guywei grows to be extremely cynical and cold towards society. Rafael lacked substance until recently, where I decided to make him an aspiring scholar in agricultural sciences, mostly to inspire Guywei’s character development, but also to give him relevance and motivations for when he returns.
Fun Fact: He has the potential to be a performer, but has absolutely no interest in going into the entertainment business.
This cast is arguably just as important as the major characters, but have minimal appearances or relevance to the core characters and relationships. However, they are directly involved with the major cast, and do play a role in the main timeline, not just within their own subplots.
The band that Lestari used to be a part of until she was unwillingly removed by Damin, despite her being the sole reason that the band exists in the first place.
Damin Teoh - 16 Cantonese ☸︎
(he/him)
Despite being socially charming, Damin only has a few people he considers his friends as he holds himself to a high standard, which made it (seemingly) easy for him to kick Lestari out the band once she upset his standards. Damin begins noticing tension between him and Hassaan after this, and decides to keep Khatija closer, believing Hassan wouldn’t act on his feelings.
Languages: Bahasa Melayu, Cantonese Chinese, English
Beliefs: Damin doesn’t necessarily brood on society, and prefers to view people and their ideologies individually. He believes human beings only live once and should live to their full satisfaction, within certain boundaries of course.
Creative Development: He was created as a background character, but like the rest of the characters in the band, he was developed to create a cast of characters that Lestari could relate to in interest and age, but with differences to create potential for conflict. Over time, I also tried attaching him to other characters, but in the end I settled that he chooses the people that he attaches himself to, he’s the type of character which others depend on, and not the other way around.
Fun Fact: He wants to be a visual artist, and work designing album covers.
Hassan - 17 Malaysian ☪
(he/him)
There’s mounding pressure for Hassan as soon as Lestari is kicked out of the band, as their meetups begin feeling bleak and more and more tense, but he wants to be a part of a bigger image after being rejected from another, yet he faces a dilemma once believing that Damin was in the wrong to kick Lestari out. He dreams to be a man of confidence, yet he refuses to be an image of vulnerability, and his strongest desire currently is to work on that for himself, to see things in his blind spot.
Languages: Bahasa Melayu & English
Beliefs: Hassan believes that there is good in every single person, and while they are susceptible to corruption, he finds it difficult to believe that somebody can become so completely void of a guilty conscience or personal feelings. He really believes that with the right person and influence, people are capable of change.
Creative Development: Nikkii has helped give Hassan his name. Initially created as a background character paired with Damin, he was developed for the aforementioned reasons in Damin’s notes. But of course, these characters cannot stand alone relying on their associations with other people, thus I made him an individual. Like with his sister, I developed Hassan in a way that would divert expectations of how he should act or think, because I want people to think when they see him, and other characters, do the things that they do or say the things that they say.
Fun Fact: Suriati is the only person in his life that he would die for.
Khatija Binti Noor - 16 Yemeni Indonesian ☪
(she/her)
Joined the band via Suriati, and despite being close friends with her throughout primary school, she never knew much about Lestari until she joined the band. Generally Khatija comes off as cold towards other people, but she just doesn’t enjoy sugarcoating topics as it makes her anxious. However, she’s toned down her bluntness throughout the years, learning there’s an appropriate place and time for things, which also preserves her opinions.
Languages: Bahasa Melayu, Sanaai Arabic & English
Beliefs: Khatija finds that humans are initially neutral, but they are bound to accumulate biases and flaws over the course of their life. She believes that we should accept these flaws, and while they are dependent on a person’s environment, she also believes that people have the right to harbor disdain towards others and their flaws and that it isn’t other people’s responsibility to ensure that another person is subjectively morally just.
Creative Development: Created to be Suriati’s friend, she branches off to become her own person, however I do believe her and Suriati do share overlapping ideas, which would make them extremely close as friends. One might even say a best friend! I do think they would have some clashing in the way they express their thoughts, though neither feel that the other is in the wrong, or wrong in their form of expression.
Fun Fact: She works at a clothing store for quick money and finds it fine, but hates when pretentious tourists try to bargain.
Suriati - 16 Malaysian ☪
(she/her)
Suriati - 16 Malaysian ☪
Hassan’s younger sister, who introduced Lestari to him when they were a few years younger. As someone who isn’t involved with the band personally, not much is known about her by the members other than her brother. Although she appears to be one dimensionally lighthearted on the surface level, she’s quite observant in social situations, but has little to no interest in getting involved with those situations herself and instead spends her time enjoying her hobbies on the sidelines of issues.
Languages: Bahasa Melayu & English
Beliefs: Suriati doesn’t like to interfere with the timeline, and much prefers for things to happen to her rather than change it, as she believes she gets a much more honest view of the world and of others if she maintains her distance. She believes the majority of people’s actions are done out of preserving their ego, making it increasingly harder to read someone the older or more involved they get.
Creative Development: Initially just Lestari’s friend, she became Hassan’s sister quickly as I wanted to write a fun sibling relationship, but also to divert expectations of their respective sexes and how they should act. I also think she would definitely be Lestari’s longest standing friend, just based on their similar ideologies, and it would provide interesting interactions with the rest of the band.
Fun Fact: She is a runner, she loves running, walking, sprinting, jogging, all of the above.
X/Naga/(Alias of others) - 11 (Appearance) Ambiguously Asian (Appearance)
Gender is dependent.
X is a neutral party, never lifting a finger to necessarily cause events, but always being there when they occur, though it’s rare for any of the characters to recognize X immediately unless revealed. When shown as a human being, X is wearing a regular gray long sleeved shirt with batik pants and sandals and generally is in a good or neutral mood. Yet seemingly without friends or associates, he is not fully neutral. X enjoys watching things occuring or participating in those things, and above all, making his associates happy.
Languages: All
Beliefs: Dependent
Creative Development: Born to be a villain, forced to be a neutral party. Over the years, he has gone from my most evil character to one that simply just exists when someone feels scared, and I’m happy with that. Prior to this change though, X has gone from running a wine tycoon, to being a wolf in sheep’s clothing, to many other evil things, but I’ve retired him from those roles, and I feel as if his current role fits him much better. If he’s going to be a concept, I don’t think putting him in a box would do him any good, diminishing all the other (and potential) roles the concept he embodies, which is the fear of the unknown, to be present.
Fun Fact: X appears differently for everyone he chooses to reveal himself to, based on their own experiences and ideas. Aka, different body, words, voice, and actions.
Amalgam - Vague appearance of an adult, no ethnic or racially identifiable features.
Gender is dependent.
Assumedly works under X, but doesn’t speak, yet is clearly capable of communicating and understanding others to a T regardless of language. Amalgam wears a green and white tiled suit and dress pants with brown dress shoes and a pin. There seems to only exist one of them though.
Languages: All
Beliefs: Dependent/Variable
Abilities:
Creative Development: Akin to how X used to be a villain, Amalgam was meant to be evil as well, but now they’re just a concept, or rather a branch off of X as a character. However, do not be fooled into thinking that they are still inextricably linked!
Fun Fact: Like X, their appearance is variable, but the main idea stays consistent, their actions and body do not change.
Māimun - 25 Burmese Malaysian ☪
(he/she)
Living day by day taking dirty work jobs, Māimun typically deals with work he doesn’t ask questions about. Outside of his work, he enjoys taking walks and reviewing foods in a local newspaper, something he wishes to do as his primary career, despite being unsustainable. However, when he receives a certain job at Port Klang, he becomes more bound to it than he initially realized, and his run in with the law may happen sooner than anticipated.
Languages: Bahasa Melayu, English,
Beliefs: Māimun wishes to break out of his jobs one day, not because he believes what he’s doing is wrong, but simply because he doesn’t care. On a grander scale, if he’s not the one doing the direct violence, it’s money, and it’s as simple as that. He truly believes that the government has no control over individuals, and while they can influence them, it doesn’t stop individuals from acting out of their own interests.
Creative Development:
Fun Fact:
Liem Angkiat - 23 Chinese Indonesian
(he/him)
Lestari's brother who is very fond of artwork, akin to her, possibly inspiring her strong interest in the matter. He is typically a very reserved person as well, trying not to make his problems the burden of his family or peers, thus he also spends most of his free time isolated and alone. Though during that time, it has served to make him a much more observant person, inspiring studies to become an investigator.
Career: Construction worker
Languages: Bahasa Melayu, Medan Hokkien, English
Beliefs: Liem believes people will naturally evolve and so will their flaws, and that both negatives and positives will simply go on to evolve with the world. Mostly though, he doesn't believe that people should try and be good people, but be the best versions of themselves that their experiences can lead them towards.
Creative Development: Liem was created to start off as a flat character (intentionally) but be revealed to actually be quite important. I think sibling characters are kind of written off just to contrast each other, and there's nothing wrong with that, but I wish to see them care about one another in non-conventional ways. I don't have any siblings so I kind of neglected Liem for a while, but he is very important and dear to Lestari. I don't wish to be a tell don't show person here, but these are my personal thoughts so! I'm gonna tell! Liem dotes on Lestari, though not in a very conventional way, he doesn't just serve her anything that she wants and admires all she does, but he supports all of her creative endeavors and tries to push her down a healthy path.
Fun Fact: Liem has a low spice tolerance in comparison to his sister.
Indah - 31 Malaysian ☪
(she/her)
Currently an educator, a job she never expected herself to partake in, Indah’s life has been a rollercoaster for the most part, but she begins indulging the idea of settling down peacefully, and to continue being a teacher for the remainder of her life. That is, if she wasn’t essentially covering the tracks for someone else. Indah takes it upon herself to discover who this vigilante is, piquing her own curiosity before revealing them to authorities. However, upon reveal, Indah has conflicting feelings on who they turn out to be, and begins backtracking on the idea of being a whistleblower.
Career: Teacher, former Safety Security Officer
Languages: Bahasa Melayu, English
Beliefs: Indah is the person to be consistently honest, and she expects the same to be reciprocated by her peers. She believes shielding the youth from the harsh realities of the world doesn’t help them develop and grapple with real issues that they will come to face in the future, but she struggles to convey information to her students in a manner that doesn’t come off as offensive. However, there is a level of transparency in her students she appreciates over her peers, and she tends to wish that she could be as transparent as them, without the fear of conserving her ego. Indah’s beliefs on social standards and expectations is that they have the ability to skew an individual’s form of opinion and critical thought beyond repair, and this form of social assimilation can kill the analytical ability of a person.
Creative Development: Made to contrast Nazneen, yet not so harshly as the other characters. Of course her role isn’t just to serve as an accessory to Nazneen’s character, but I think they are so intertwined that they wouldn’t be who they are without the other. Outside of Nazneen though, my intent for Indah was for her to feel kind of stuck in her life based on her experiences, and really express the frustration for her circumstances, both physical and social. I think that the loss of her arm would really frustrate her in the way that it changes how she’s perceived, as her disability doesn’t render her incapable of anything, nor make her any less independent or motivated as she was prior to losing it. Of course afterwards her world changes, but I think it would open her mind to previously not thought about concepts.
Fun Fact: She wants a pet cat, but she doesn’t have the time for one.
Zakariah Guywei (1) - (Variable Age) Papuan Malaysian ☪
(he/him)
The original consciousness of Guywei who regularly possesses different iterations of himself. Unapparent as to why he’s able to do this, and why he is more willing to do so than other iterations of himself. He’s more brash and blunt than Guywei (2) despite having a near identical upbringing, with a lack of empathy for the other versions of himself, but he does seem to care about the several worlds they reside in.
Career: Epidemiologist, variable.
Languages: Bahasa Melayu
Beliefs: Guywei believes that things are going to change, and while others will be active during it, he usually prefers to try and stay passive. Guywei typically indulges in his own pleasures and accepts things as they are, especially if they serve him.
Creative Development: He’s simply another iteration of Guywei, based off of his original personality that I had written from Aftermath Complex.
Fun Fact:When hearing about him, Guywei (2) has a hard time believing they are meant to be the same person.
