APSC 169 Sustainable Design
APSC 169 Sustainable Design
For first year engineering one of the classes taught at UBCO is APSC 169 fundamentals of sustainable design. This course teaches a lot of the ways to approach an engineering project covering the design process, the life cycle of a the project, risks and responsibilities of an engineer.
The project for the APSC 169 is based on the three categories
Rehabilitation and revitalization of watersheds
Food security and sustainable agriculture
Reducing the carbon impact of the built environment
Each one of these categories had different ways they could be achieved, my group chose the first category of rehabilitation and revitalization of watersheds. The sub category we chose within that category was to reduce the contamination of water ways from mining runoff.
My Part in the Group
For the first report I helped with the need statement, scope justification, introduction and the functions, constraints and objectives.
In the second report I made the Gantt charts for the project start to end and the critical path for the project.
In report three I helped our group make the novel solutions.
In report four I did the novel solution prototyping justifications and solution justifications.
For report five I made the inclusivity report with the six tiers of inclusivity from the initial design to the post production of our solution.
Throughout this project I have learned about the fundamentals of sustainable engineering design and the work it takes from the idea to the prototype testing and all the considerations needed to be accounted for when designing a project. Working through this course has taught me that more than just calculations and design features are needed in a project. The sustainability and life cycle of the product and its resources need to be considered when designing and making the lowest environmental impact and the legal obligations that engineers hold to make sure all of their designs are safe to operate as we are the ones who sign off on the project for safety.
