The house in Norway in which Ben was raised
Ben's declaration of intent to become a U.S. Citizen, dated February 14, 1924. There is an error on the document, stating that he arrived in New York on March 23, 1920, but he actually arrived on March 25, 1921. Either he told them the wrong information or they wrote it down wrong. Since he was still learning English, the clerk probably misheard him.
(I wrote about 90% of this story of Ben's life in 1982 as his eulogy. I have added some additional information where it helps tell the story.)

The 1920 Norway Census listing Ben (Kjerskov) as the head of the household at 20 years old. His father died when Ben was 16. Note that Ben (Kjerskov) had begun to use Bendiksen as his last name instead of Hansen, the last name he would have been given at birth.

Grandpa's childhood home where he and his family lived from about 1900-1920 in Kjerringøy, Norway. This photo hung on the wall of my grandparents' house in Ballard for my entire childhood and I used to point at it and say to Grandpa, "I'm going there someday!" I did exactly that in 2014.
