A Top Down Shoot-Em-Up
DESCRIPTION:
Meowmento Mori is a top down shoot-em-up game developed with a focus on creating a simple gameplay experience.
Developed as part of an assignment piece, this game was my first real venture into Unity and actually developing a game.
ABOUT THE GAME:
Development Time: 7 weeks, half-time
Game Engine: Unity
Assets: Self-made
Inspiration: Vampire Survivors, 20 Minutes Till Dawn
PRE-PRODUCTION
PAPER PROTOTYPING
As soon as the assignment began, I had a good idea of what I wanted to create. Inspired by games such as Vampire Survivors We started to make so paper prototypes of our desired gameplay.
STORYBOARDING
Moving on, some storyboarding of the gameplay loop i wanted to create was done. Sadly, some of the concepts such as the exp and levels system never made it to the final game. This was due to both a lack of time and lack of experience in development.
CHARACTER CONCEPTS
One of the first things I got attached to was the character and theming of the game. I wanted it to be focused around a cursed, life-draining shotgun but still wanted the game to be cute. So I ended up creating a grizzled feline treasure hunter as the protagonist.
POSTMORTEM
Meowmento Mori as the first project we actually got to experience the whole game development cycle in, as well as a lot of my cohort's first experience using the Unity engine.
Unfortunately, during production I didn't document any screenshots of the game being created, but due to the lack of experience I had while creating the game there wasn't much to look at.
The end result of the game was something very simple. A game which didn't have all the mechanics I had originally wanted, with a small amount of art assets and the bare basics of functionality.
While the game doesn't look, or even play like much, it was a very satisfying small project for me to take my first real step into game dev but definitely left me wanted to make something better.
