Immurement of shoe © Belton House
A shoe was found in the roof rafters of the stables, believed deposited to protect against evil. Belton plans to return the shoe to where it was found once the repairs are finished, to keep those witches away.
The Concealed Shoe Index maintained by Northampton Museum, reveals that the most common place of concealment is the chimney, fireplace or hearth (26%), followed by under the floor or above the ceiling (23%), and almost as many concealed in the roof. As of 2019, this index will be online.
