When it came to Los Angeles nightlife in the summer of 2020, the only real game in town was a restaurant. Back then, staff members in brand-new PPE scoured to and fro, serving those willing to gather in public for a meal and the chance to be perceived. It was a time in the city when the edges of normalcy had cracked wide open, strained against the weight of the pandemic, worsening economic inequality and a nationwide racial reckoning. It was that same highly charged summer that marked the debut of Thea, a small West 3rd Street eatery offering modern Greek cuisine and the club-like atmosphere that some Angelenos crave: sparklers, popped champagne bottles and bejeweled belly dancers, all from the comfort of your seat.

The vibe: Despite cramped quarters, Thea manages to channel the lively, youthful atmosphere of Mykonos and other European party destinations with moody pink interior lighting, loud music and belly dancing.

We found ourselves at their service for our very first meal on the island. It was dinner time and we settled in for a long, lazy meal. The non-vegetarians were disappointed on finding that most of their dishes had to be pre-ordered (so they could source the meat). Nevertheless, we decided to stick for the ambience, and what a great decision that turned out to be!

I always try to seek out somewhere a little different to take my wife to. Be it different in terms of its cooking style, ingredients or ambience, I am not fussy, but it has to have a little bit of X factor.

The restaurant itself is tiny, with around 12 covers and reservations open around a month in advance so set your calendar reminders (no, just me?). This really adds to the ambience though as you get incredible service with both drinks and food. They offer wine pairing which we of course took and was one of the best we have done, even offering choices when it came to desserts depending on if you are a dessert or fortified wine drinker.

Bob Moses, the Vancouver bred duo consisting of Tom Howie and Jimmy Vallance, came to life in the Brooklyn underground scene of 2012. Early single releases on taste-making electronic label Scissor &Thread, lead to signing with Domino Records and the late 2015 release of Days Gone By, the debut album. Meshing guitar licks, a moody smolder and a dash of dance-floor ambience with lyrical depth and classic songwriting, the duo created a sound that appeals equally to club goers and rock music fans.

One of the most iconic destinations on Sydney's Northern Beaches

The Buddha Belly Established 1999,

Taking its name from the Buddha Belly Bamboo a lusty specimen native to Asia, and revered by the monks who grew it as a protective fence around their homes.

The Buddha Belly has earned a strong reputation and loyal following for its fresh food, generous portions, friendly service and a relaxed ambience.Sitting comfortably in a thicket of bamboo surrounded with tranquility stunning Water features, Ponds, Koi Fish, Water Dragons, Crocking Frogs with Profusion of Palms, Plants & Flowers, The Buddha Belly Resembles a Balinese Temple.

Surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens and only using the freshest of finest ingredients, Terrey hills can now lay claim to a unique choice of Asian inspired dishes.

I very much enjoyed the Press Gang as much for the ambience as the food. The ceilings are very low, with rough hewn wooden beams, and the walls are stone. There is a lot of dark wood and brass, and the place is very comfortable and inviting, as well as having good, friendly service.

As for the Belly itself, the balance of meat to unctuously delicious fat was perfect. The skin was at the perfect degree of crispiness at first bite combined with a nice sticky, chewiness a few seconds later and the textural quality of this was complemented by the unctuous juiciness of the meat and fat. I thought this was one of the best pork belly dishes I have ever been served.

Opened in January 2021 in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, bellyrub is a Korean-South American fusion restaurant that offers healthy, responsibly sourced salads and plates. The Smoke Signal decided to go sample some of their signature plates and salads a few months after their opening.

One of my favourites is their gyoza nabe, which is an absolute belly-filler with the fat, juicy dumplings and profusion of greens. Another popular nabe is their kabuto kimchi nabe, a spicier version simmered with salmon fish head.

Chef Shigenori Fujimoto has teamed up with Frank Leon and Evan Ross on a Japanese fusion menu that never misses a beat. Dishes are often irreverent, as in rich and savory udon carbonara with paper thin smoked pork belly, creamy egg and parmigiano; and the sticky-sweet oxtail-stuffed bao is craveworthy. Seafood is impressive, whether it's ceviche or sashimi-quality halibut bathed in a ponzu sauce vinaigrette. Chef's specials include shimeji risotto or whole baked branzino with sake.
