The Minnesota Literacy Council created a volunteer-led curriculum. The curriculum consists of individual 1 to 4 week units that each focus on one theme. The themes are life-skills focused at the lower three levels (pre-lit, beginning and intermediate). At the advanced level the units utilize content-based language learning. The purpose in creating and implementing this curriculum is to enable students to grow their language and literacy skills in ways that will allow them to participate more successfully in their communities in Minnesota and in the US. The curriculum is envisioned as a tool to help students gain knowledge and abilities in order to reach some important steps along the path to their life goals.

Reading Skills for Today's Adults contain multi-level stories that can be used for fluency and comprehension. The site is the result of a project that was designed to create leveled reading selections that are appropriate for and valued by adult learners. The materials, combined with the research-proven strategies of repeated reading and guided oral reading, aid in building learners' fluency and comprehension skills. The project helps adults become better readers and more informed consumers, parents, employees, citizens and community members. The focus of these reading selections is on topics such us: Civics, Employment, Housing, Health, School, Money, and Government. The site is the work of Marshall Adult Education with grants from the Minnesota Department of Education and Minnesota Literacy Council.

The Center for Adult English Language Acquisition (CAELA) was created to help states build their capacity to promote English language learning and academic achievement of adults learning English. Funded by the Office of Vocational and Adult Education (OVAE), U.S. Department of Education, CAELA accomplishes its mission through the following tasks:

  • Leading an initiative to build state capacity for improving the skills of teachers and administrators in adult ESL programs
  • Developing an easy-to-use repository of resources (e.g., research studies, instructional curricula, information on language acquisition) that are accessible through the CAELA Web site
  • Producing easily accessible materials that synthesize research and make applications to practice
  • Developing a toolkit of training materials for professional developers
  • Providing technical assistance to adult ESL teachers, programs, and states
