Mrs. Ellis has been a teacher at Bellflower High School for almost 15 years. She has a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Biology with a minor in Chemistry, a Master of Arts (MA) in Environmental Studies with an emphasis on Sustainable Development. In addition, she holds teaching credentials in Secondary Life Sciences, Health, and Career Technical Education (CTE). Besides some work in a herpetology lab at CSULB, she has done research in Costa Rica on white-faced Capuchin monkeys as well as study common fish and coral families on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Mrs. Ellis is a Red Cross instructor for CPR/First-Aid and AED in adults and pediatrics. She is married to Mr. Ellis with two young boys and likes to read, paint, scuba dive, exercise, hike, cook, watch TV, cuddle with her pet schnauzer, visit museums, attend concerts, go camping and travel.
Introduction to Health Careers is designed to expose students to 17 different healthcare career fields. Students will complete modules in biomedical engineering, biotechnology research and development, clinical lab practices, dentistry, emergency medical technician, environmental health and safety, forensics, health information management, medical imaging, mental health services, nursing, ophthalmology, pharmacology, speech therapy, sports medicine, therapeutic services, and veterinary medicine. The goal of this course is to expose students to the diverse career opportunities available in the healthcare field, and increase and reinforce related academic skills.
The curriculum and yearlong course provides students the knowledge and skills needed to choose a career in the Patient Care Pathway.
Anatomy/Physiology and Health Occupations I (CalAPS) are highly recommended as prerequisites.
The Medical Assistant (MA) high school program consists of 180 hours of guided curriculum, both tangible and online, that prepares and qualifies students to sit for the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) exam. The program is designed to equip students with the skills necessary to assist patients in hospitals, medical clinics, assisted living environments and physician offices. Medical Assistants provide direct patient care as well as assist the physician with filing, recording, patient scheduling for appointments and specialized testing. 40 internships hours in a clinical and/or medical office setting are required for certification. Possible Careers for Medical Assistants include, but are not limited to: Hospitals, Rehabilitation Centers, Home Health Agencies, Hospice Care, Physician offices, and Medical Clinics, and Long-Term Care facilities.
This course aligns with and incorporates the California Career Technical Education Model Curriculum Standards, California State Standards, and Standards for Career Ready Practice, Anchor Standards, and Pathway Standards.
Learn to earn an industry-recognized certification. The curriculum in this capstone course provides students the knowledge and skills needed to be successful in passing the Certified Medical Assistant (CCMA) test through the National Healthcare Association (NHA).
