February 1st is “National Freedom Day.” In your own words, what does it mean to be free?

February 4, 1913, Rosa Parks was born. In 1955, Rosa Parks was arrested and fined for not giving up her seat on the bus to a white passenger. Many people admired her for her confidence and bravery. If you had been Rosa Parks in this situation, would have done the same thing? Why or why not?

Dec 1^st/2^nd

On this day in 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give up her bus seat to a white man. This was a brave action by Parks. What is the bravest thing you have ever done? Be sure to include details about the event and why you think you were brave.

Dec 6^th/7^th

On December 6, 1865, the 13th Amendment was passed. This amendment abolished, or ended, slavery. Why do you think it was important for our country to end slavery?

Dec 8^th/9^th

Inventor Eli Whitney was born on this day in 1765. Whitney is well-known for his invention of the cotton gin. This machine made the harvesting of cotton much easier for the early farmers. What is an invention you could create that would help someone complete a job around your house? Be sure to explain your invention, what it does, and why it will help.

Dec 13^th/14

On December 14, 1911, the South Pole was discovered. If you were able to travel to the South Pole, who would you want to take along with you and why? You can choose from anyone – someone you know, someone famous, someone alive, someone who is no longer living, anyone.

Dec 15^th/16^th

On this day in 1903, the Wright Brothers made their first flight. Orville and Wilbur had to do a great deal of teamwork in order to be successful. Think of a time that you were involved in teamwork. Explain the situation and why you feel teamwork was needed to be successful.

On this day in 1889, Thomas Edison showed the 1st motion picture using a Kinetoscope he had invented. Some people may argue that this was one of the most important inventions in history. What do you think was the most important invention ever and why?

On this day in 1876, the first two-way telephone conversation took place. If you could call anyone, dead or alive who would it be and why?

First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt was born on this day in 1884. She was quoted as saying: “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” What do you think she met by that?

Brazilian soccer player, Edison Pele, was born on this day in 1940. In order to become such an incredible soccer player, Pele had to practice. What is something that you would like to become better at? Explain what you will need to do in order to improve your skills. (This doesn’t have to be a sport.)

On this day in 1929, the Stock Market crashed. A lot of people lost money and lives were changed forever. Explain what you would do with $1,000 and why?

September Writing Prompts (minimum of 10 sentences )

Sept 1st & 2nd - On September 2, 1789, the U.S. Treasury Department was established. If you could design a new $1 bill, explain what famous American you would have on the front.

Sept 6th & 7th - On September 5, 1774, the first Continental Congress convened. One objective of the congress was to compose a statement of colonial rights. If you had been a delegate representing your colony, what right would you have been fighting for and why?

Sept 8^th & 9^th - September 7, 1927 was the day the first all-electronic television image was transmitted. Philo T. Farnsworth’s invention made it possible to build televisions with no moving parts. What type of an influence do you think television has had on our world? What have been some of the advantages? Have there also been some disadvantages?

Sept 13^th & 14^th - On September 8, 1892, the original Pledge of Allegiance was published. This is not the pledge we recite today because it has been revised two times since its original publication. Do you think all classrooms in the United States should be required to recite the Pledge of Allegiance each day? Should students or teachers have the option not to say the pledge? Why or why not?

Sept 15^th and 16^th - September 11th is a Day of Remembrance. As we honor those who lost their lives on this day 2001. Tell us what you are thankful for and why.

Sept 20^th and 21^st - The first spacecraft to reach the moon did so on September 14, 1959. The Luna 2, a Soviet spacecraft, landed on the moon and discovered it had no significant magnetic field. Do you think there will ever be a day when humans live on the moon?

Sept 22^nd & 23rd - September 17th is “Citizenship Day.” Explain what you think it means to be a good citizen of the World, the United States, your state, your town, and your school.

Sept 27^th & 28^th - On September 18, 1851, the New York Times newspaper was first published. Do you think it’s important for students your age to keep up on current events? Why or why not?
