The UIC Writing Center opens its doors on September 2, its trained peer tutors offering brainstorming, feedback, and confidence to enrolled UIC undergrad students. Visit 105 Grant Hall during open hours 10:00–6:00 on weekdays through December 12.
Schedule a 50-minute appointment 10:00–5:00 Mondays through Thursdays, either in-person at 105 Grant Hall or online through their scheduling website or email. In a pinch? Physical and virtual drop-in hours are there 11:00–2:00 on weekdays for a brief 20-minute session.
The task may be a research paper, personal statement, resume, application, or even email. Your tutor is here to “[talk] about your writing and your writing habits,” the center’s Assistant Director Charitianne Williams explains, “with another student who has been there.”
“Great tutor. Actually cares,” said one student testimonial describing the 95 percent of writers satisfied with their appointments last school year.
Students aren’t expected to enter a session with any writing. Describe the task at hand, bring in ideas and questions, and the tutor will approach the author without judgment, with interest, and with opportunities to make choices.
The center’s flexibility is important—asynchronous mobilized the 4,874 appointments and 2,407 writers served last school year. That’s two meetings per writer.
Consider past students who honor their tutors for “confidence to land an internship” and repairing poor grades “to an A in both courses.”
“All scholarly writing is peer-reviewed in some way,” Williams explains, “whether the text was written by an undergraduate student, graduate student, professor, or researcher.” Following the center’s mission, its peer tutors are here for fellow peers to turn to.
This fall, the UIC Writing Center welcomes any visit, whether for writing advice or to use the space for writing and quiet study.
