General Notes - All Performers
Full hair and makeup are required for Dress Rehearsal.
All dancers (all genders) require a little bit of powder so that they aren't shiny under the bright stage lights. They need blush and some light lips as well, otherwise they get 'washed out' with the lights. Everybody should also darken their eyebrows, which helps with expression on stage. Beyond that, dancers are welcome to wear other makeup to their own comfort level!
No one should have painted fingernails (A clear, shiny coat is fine, or a french manicure, but no colours please!). Also, if you are planning on dying your hair any neat bright colours, it would be great if you could wait until after the show! Thank you!
Please do not use hairspray or any aerosol sprays in the dressing areas at NACC - some dancers and volunteers are sensitive to smells, sprays, etc. so please be aware and courteous of this!
If your dancer has sensitive skin - it is good to start with a base of lotion (that they are familiar with) before applying any other makeup.
Please ensure your dancer is “Stage-ready” when they get to the theatre! We do not have enough people backstage to do hair and makeup once dancers arrive.
Please see below for character specific hair and makeup.
Hair and Makeup by Character
Clara - Half up, half down with curls
Party Kids - (with long hair) please have your hair half up, half down in curls, or in French braids down the head, then curled. You will be given ribbons for your hair that match your dress. Don't lose them please!
Party Kids - (with short hair) Nicely combed, slicked down and pinned away from face if needed.
Adult Party Guests - Think fancy! Curls, half up, a twist, anything you'd like.
Butler / Drosselmeyer - Hair tidy
Nanny - Ballet Bun
Dolls - Two high ponytails with curls and pink circles for cheeks.
Harlequin - Two high space buns
Nutcracker - Two dutch braids
Soldiers - Red circles for cheeks - we will do these at the theatre. Hair needs to be in french braids if length permits, or two low ponytails. Their hats pin best into french braids.
Mice - Two braids (if hair long enough)
Rats - Ballet Bun (ears will be handed out at NACC), with black lips and black dot on nose
Hot Chocolate - Low side bun on RIGHT side
Bon Bons - Two low ponytails (they wear a bonnet)
Candy Canes - high ponytail
Peppermint - Ballet Bun
Licorice - Black or red shapes on your face (check in with Ady if unsure)
Mother Ginger - However you'd like!
Snowqueen, Snowflakes, Flutes, Gingerbread, Tea, Flowers/Garlands, Angels, Sugar Plum, Coffee, Mouse Queen, - Ballet bun at back of head (not on top, please). If hair is too short to get into a ballet bun, please secure away from face.
If hair is too short for a bun, please ensure that hair is neatly combed, and sides are pinned back so we can see the dancer's face.
Bun makers can be found at Wal-Mart or Shoppers and are a super easy way to make a bun - but make sure it's pinned in well!
