Zondag 11:43

C is for culture:

  • “Pedagogische studiedag, vrijdag”: During the school year, there are a couple of pre-planned free days for the students - called ‘pedagogische studiedagen’ (= pedagogical study days). On these days, the teachers go on extra (re)training, learning new techniques, study pedagogical materials or changes that happened to the curriculum.

  • Doing something on Wednesday afternoon: In kindergarten, primary and secondary school the typical schoolweek consists of four full days and one half day until 12 o’clock - the Wednesday. It’s not uncommon that on these days, friends hang out together or (sporting) clubs organise their activities.

Blink-and-y’ll-miss-it: Jana’s decorative board in her room says ‘Dear Santa, please bring wine’. According to her tabs, she was also watching an episode of ‘The Bachelor’ before searching up Zoë’s Facebook.

Maandag 10:16

C is for culture: The start and end time of the schoolday is indicated by a school bell. It usually starts around 8.30, the first recess around 10 for 10 to 15 minutes, lunch break starts at 12 for one hour, the second recess is around 2 in the afternoon for 10 to 15 minutes and the day ends around half past 3. There are exceptions of course, for example in trade schools with practical lessons or schools with a lot of students who might split up their lunch breaks.

Blink-and-y’ll-miss-it: Jens was eating dried raisins with water from 'Albert Heijn', Luca drinks unbranded lemonade and Amber has 'Arizona tea'.

Woensdag 14:27

Blink-and-y’ll-miss-it: Jana and her mom go shopping for bras at 'Hunkemöller', before stepping into the store where they run into Britt.

Donderdag 20:37

Oop, there it is, the homophobia / heteronormativity: Jens calling the song ‘Shape of you’ a gay song, Robbe teasing Jens with Moyo’s constant presence - saying they should get married and go on a honeymoon.

That’s character: Robbe is nervous towards Jana’s question - he slightly bites his lip in the corners, clenches his jaw, ruffles through his hair and moves his hands. Certain tics he consistently repeats in S3.

Vrijdag 11:47

C is for culture:

  • “What does the abbreviation 'CCC' stand for?”: The CCC (= Cellules Communistes Combattantes) was a Belgian terrorism group, active from 1984 until 1985, causing a total of 14 terrorist attacks. Their last target was the 'Bank of America' in Antwerp. Several leaders were later arrested. An important conspiracy theory about the CCC states that they had moles within the Belgian security services, but even though some things were too accurate to be coincidence, concrete proof was never found.

  • “Ik ga op reis en ik neem mee” (= “I’m going on holiday and I’m bringing): A typical game for when you’re bored or on a road trip without distractions. Each player states a new thing to bring along on this fictitious trip, but you have to keep repeating what the players before you said. This game keeps going until one forgets a previous stated item.

Oop, there it is, the homophobia / heteronormativity: Moyo’s statements “Then I’ll keep my underwear on”, “I know I’m irresistible for your kind”, the sarcastic response “I don’t thínk so” to “You think I’m gay?”.

Blink-and-y’ll-miss-it: Jana is reading 'The ultimate survival guide to being a girl’ by Chrostin (Christina de Witte), a Belgian female comic cartoon artist, who draws hilarious yet relatable cartoons about being a girl nowadays.

Vrijdag 18:12

Nod to the OG: Moyo saying “O, drama” and SKAM OG P. Chris saying “Dramaaaaa”.

Blink-and-y’ll-miss-it: The boys are eating farfalle bolognese.
