The international project Better Environmental for Next Generation (2023-1-PT01-KA210-SCH-000152841) is funded by the European Union Erasmus+ Program.

It is Key Action 2, Action Type: KA210 - Small-scale partnerships in school education

Currently, one of the most pressing challenges humanity confronts is the safeguarding of our environment. This concern has been resonating on the international stage through various summits, yielding significant resolutions. However, not all of these resolutions have been fully implemented. Examples include the Convention on Climate Change, the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Rio Declaration, the Declaration on Forests, and Agenda 21. Despite this, they have played a vital role in identifying issues and fostering a broader environmental consciousness.

The primary objective of Environmental Education for Sustainability is to instill values and instigate shifts in attitudes and behaviors towards the environment. This aims to equip young individuals with the awareness and preparedness for responsible, dynamic, and well-informed citizenship in light of contemporary environmental challenges. To achieve this, our intent is for students to acquire the skills to assess and engage with their immediate surroundings.

With this mission in mind, we recognize a substantial need to educate our schools' students on becoming conscientious and responsible future citizens who understand the imperative to preserve the environment. We believe it is our responsibility to cultivate in them a deep appreciation for the necessity of conserving and safeguarding the planet from ecological catastrophe. Naturally, this endeavor calls for not only the cooperation of the children but also a substantial shift in the perspectives of their parents, some of whom may not fully grasp the urgent need for environmental protection. This has been observed in our respective countries, as evidenced by reluctance in waste sorting and the persistent pollution of the planet with plastic waste.

Our schools are already taking steps to educate our students about the threats posed by the consumption-driven lifestyles of the 21st century. However, this is an incremental process, one we hope will be significantly expedited through international collaboration.

We, the teachers from participating schools, aspire to raise awareness among our students about both local and global threats. Additionally, we aim to propose innovative yet pragmatic solutions through tailored activities and assignments. To lend meaningfulness to this project, ecological solutions should be devised jointly with students from other European centers who share common interests, concerns, and solutions. This sense of transnational community is motivating and enriching, and will imbue our project with added value.

Furthermore, we seek internationalization to formulate strategies that enable us to confront challenges, make decisions, address problems, and promote values such as tolerance and inclusion within a European context. Strengthening cultural ties through collaborative efforts to solve environmental issues should yield benefits for future generations of EU citizens.
