Over 1,400 years ago Allah and his messenger, Prophet Mohammad, mentioned that honey can heal numerous medicinal conditions. The Quran promotes honey as nutritious and healthy. According to the Hadith, Prophet Muhammad strongly recommended honey for healing purposes including stomach illness, cough and cold, and more.
In one story, a man came to Prophet Muhammad because his brother had a stomach disorder. The Prophet told him to drink more honey. The man returned numerous times as there was no change and the Prophet said the same thing every time. Then the last time the man came, he told the Prophet his brother had recovered and was cured just by drinking honey. Other hadith books like Tirmithi and Ibn Majah also reported that the Prophet Muhammad said, "Make use of the two remedies: honey and the Quran." and “Whosoever eats honey (at least) three times per month will meet with no great affliction."
The holy book of Islam, the Quran, promotes honey as a nutritious and healthy food. The 16th surah of the Quran is named "Surah al-Nahl" which translates to "the honeybee".
In this surah Allah communicates directly with the bee, guiding them on how to build houses among trees and mountains. It also sheds light on the remarkable ability of bees to create their hives in various habitats and settings. It highlights the importance of honey produced by the bees and the benefits of honey in existence. The varying colors of honey result from the different sources of nectar. Essentially, honey and bees signify ways of living and play an important role in human lives.
As the surah lets us know, bees transform fruits into honey, a drink of various colors. The bee can produce honey only because it is guided by God. Thus, honey is Allah's ability to support humans by providing them with benevolent substances. There are numerous examples of Prophet Muhammed pointing out the power of honey. The Islamic medical literature, especially the work of Ibn Sina, lists several beneficial uses of honey, better digestion, preserving youthfulness, good memory, and happiness.
