The action plan is to create teacher teams that have the opportunity to lead whole school professional developments on topics ranging from ELL teaching strategies including the SIOP method to Visible Learning concepts. The foundational competency of Exploring and Challenge Inequity influences this project because I want to create a team with individuals from different backgrounds of teaching. I want more voices to be heard and maybe that will help others realize that they can also be leaders. The Instructional pathway competency that will influence this project is Facilitating Collaborative Relationships. I want to move from being a member of the professional development team to leading them and creating the collaborative relationships in those teams. The two overarching competencies are Continuing Learning and Education and Technological Facility. Continuing Learning and Education influence this project because we will work as a team to develop professional development at our school level on the SIOP method and Visible Learning concepts. I chose teachers to be on teams that had SIOP training to allow for teachers that had done research and gone to training to lead a whole school training. For the visible learning team I chose people from various departments and they went to Corwin's Teacher Clarity conference. Those teachers after looking at research will decide the major ideas that need to be addressed or used in our school. Technological Facility enhances this project because it allows us to develop when to meet and create our presentation synchronously and asynchronously. In Design Artifacts 1 and 2 are the initial and final action plans.
Design Artifact 1 and 2: The initial plan and the final Capstone Action Plan
I will use my role as the Building Learning Facilitator to advocate to my principal for a professional development request. I will coordinate with administrators and colleagues to enact the plan. This addresses the needs of stakeholders because we are broadening the voices of teachers who want to lead professional development. I believe it is important to let more diverse groups share their knowledge with each other, so we can learn as a collective group. This idea of including more people in leading professional development builds capacity since more and more people will start to feel comfortable sharing their wisdom and research. In Design Artifact 3, one of my colleagues has stated that they believe the best professional development has been teacher driven instead and getting a wide variety of teachers will only allow for everyone to see themselves as part of the community.
Design Artifacts 3 and 4: Empathy Interviews
I will collaborate through technology to set up meeting times and create presentations with my teacher teams. I will be sending out google forms as in artifact 5, 6, and 7 to gather teacher feedback after professional developments. As a team we will look over the effectiveness of our professional development and add opportunities for more learning for others. This data from the google forms will guide our reflection and develop next steps for the next year. As a team we will also reflect on professional developments from the past and see what we can do to enhance the experience.
Design Artifact 5, 6, and 7: Google forms that were created to ask initial feedback from PD.
We will address challenges by communicating as a team. A lot of the challenges I believe we will encounter is making time to meet as a team. Each person has obligations outside of contract time and I need to be respectful of that. With that said, teachers will be compensated for time spent outside of contract hours. Another obstacle that I will encounter is making hours of research and conference information fit into only a few short hours of PLC time. The time aspect is a big one since I want to allow PLC members to meet and talk about daily teaching issues and successes as a subject team. With this, I will ask our team "what are the big things all teachers should know" and we will focus on those driving our limited time. The last obstacle is making sure I create a well rounded team that teachers can identify with. This is part of the major challenge of this project since I want to create a diverse team of presenters. I addressed that by having most departments represented by a team member. In future years, I would love for all departments to have representation on a team.
I will know my action plan is successful when I look at the google forms and assess what my colleagues grasped and what they need more time on. I will also know its success from talking to members of the team and asking them how they thought the presentations went. I will also know from talking to other teachers who were not on the professional development teams about the presentations.
