Becoming-dancer

About the Work

Becoming-dancer is a contemporary dance duet between a dancer in wheelchair Wonyoung Kim, and a non-disabled dancer Kisub Choi. Co-choreographed by Sinae Rha and Kisub Choi(Project YYIN), it was premiered in 2020 in Seoul, South Korea.

Probing the ontology of dance

As of today it is no wonder every movement can become dance; dance is open to all kinds of movement and even to non-movement. The question of what is dance seems “old.” If dance is open to all movement, however, is all movement open to all bodies?

When every movement became dance, how were we to imagine the body dancing? In order to radicalise what is dance and to expand the imagination of what dance can be, it is not the movement but the notion of body itself that is questioned in Becoming-dancer.
