Parents and teachers alike say "pick your battles" when it comes to behavior management. What this allows is for students to get away with certain behaviors that are inappropriate for the learning environment. It allows students to push boundaries and gives them a lot of power over the learning environment. So I'm deeming a new phrase, a new and necessary one since "pick your battles" is just plain wrong.
I know, I know. It's not as sexy as "pick your battles". But it's tried and true. It WORKS!
Instead of "pick your battles", you need to be in control. It's your classroom and you're in charge of 22+ students, their wellbeing and their learning. So set your boundaries with known student limitations.
Story time: this is a story about Jake (Jake from State Farm...). Jake is a 5 year old, Kindergarten student, who is uber wiggly. Jake absolutely cannot sit still. He tries though, so hard! Jake also doesn't do very well with upfront discipline. It's not how he accepts correction. Jake responds to personal talks and praise. At this point in the year, I've recognized a limitation of Jake's: his inability to stay still. One place I need him to be is in one spot and listening during carpet time. So, set boundaries with known limitations!
Boundary: Stay in carpet spot, hands and body to self
Known Limitation: Jake won't be able to sit still
Jake's full Boundary with Known Limitations: Jake may crawl in a circle, twist and move, or play with a fidget, while staying on his carpet spot and keeping his body to himself.
I have a clear expectation and Jake is given the freedom to be...Jake. Win-win!
Next time you feel exhausted or just want to give up. Don't. YOU CAN DO IT! Look in the mirror and repeat:
Take a moment and think:
What are my expectations?
What are the student's limitations?
How can this be a "win-win" scenario?
Then train the student. Remember: use positive reinforcement. Rewards, positive praise, peer/teacher attention, etc. Make meeting the expectations well worth it!
Good luck! And let me know how it goes. Feel free to comment if you have any questions :)
