The artworks produced during the Black Arts Movement was cutting edge and definitely broke the mold of what was and wasn't accepted by society. The Civil Rights Movement was happening during this time, fighting for equal rights for people of all color. Black men and women were left out and not appreciated for who they were. So as a response, they expressed themselves in their artwork and defied the expectations of who black people were and how white people viewed black culture and histroy.
The Black Arts Movement was a channel for black artists to express their resistance against the oppressive experiences they faces. More specifically, the women during this time spoke out against rape, murder, racial and gender discrimination and any other injustices they encountered.
This movement left behind many universal and timeless works of literature, poetry and theater. It helped change the future of art and laid the foundation for modern spoken word.
It inspired literary artists think deeply about the function and purpose of their work. Artists began to consider their contributions and responsibilities to their communities and society. It forced artists to think and live outside the box. In addition to that, it helped black artists see themselves outside of white America's "lenses".
August Wilson is one playwright who was heavily influenced by the B.A.M. His plays encapsulated the vision of the movement, by celebrating the history and life of black people.
