Beautiful Transgressions
An Exploration of Transgender Stories in America
A project to document and share transgender stories from across the United States of America.
A project to document and share transgender stories from across the United States of America.
Beautiful Transgressions is a documentary project that will feature full-length audio interviews with trans people from across the US alongside a photo gallery with featured stories. The project will be available online for free viewing, as well as at a photo gallery at Happy Time Studio in Issaquah, Washington, May 24th-26th.
Transgender stories are difficult to come across, whether you're transgender OR cisgender. Trans stories with positive and accurate representation are even rarer. The purpose of Beautiful Transgressions is to share a wide variety of stories from real people to combat the poor representation of trans people in media and allow people to learn more about the interesting and unique lives of their trans peers.
The requirements are as follows: you must consider yourself a transgender or gender nonconforming person, have lived within the US for at least 2 years, be willing to work with a young person, and be able to participate in a photo shoot and/or interview. Ideally, all participants will be able to participate in both. Specific cases can discuss their preferences with me!
Whenever works for you! I am not conducting any interviews until June 20th, as I'm on a personal break to make sure I can graduate! In the process, interviews will come first, and follow-ups and photoshoots will come after the interview (if you prefer otherwise, contact me!). There is a list of pre-decided locations to choose from to have your interview conducted or we can meet over Zoom. Meeting in-person is preferred for sound quality.
This project is for anyone who wants to learn more about the diverse experiences of trans people in the US. It's for fellow trans people who want to connect with other US subcultures and other generations. It's for cisgender people who have only seen trans people through screens. It's for kids who don't know that the gender binary isn't the only option.Â
Beautiful Transgressions is the vast story of transgender Americans, but it's for anyone who is willing to listen.
