Aanya Verma is an Indian-American activist from New York. She attends high school in central NY and aspires to become a righteous OB/GYN in the future. She is the founder and executive director of BeatHemorrhage, an NGO working to bring light to the issue of postpartum hemorrhage and improve maternal healthcare through the use of social media and improving resources at hospitals.
Aanya first got the idea to start BeatHemorrhage after she saw how widespread the issue was. She recognized that there needs to be much more done to stop PPH and provide mothers with the healthcare they need, so she immediately started to create an organization that would help the world achieve these goals.
BeatHemorrhage is a Girl Scout Gold Award Project.
Dr. Thomas Burke is an attending physician at the Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Emergency Medicine, an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and the chief of the Division of Global Health and Human Rights in the Department of Emergency Medicine.
Dr. Burke inspired Aanya to start this project after she met with him and discussed the issue of postpartum hemorrhage. Dr. Burke was able to give Aanya invaluable information on how widespread the issue is, and what she could do with BeatHemorrhage.
