A Crisis Created By Local Council By Not Listening To All Affected Voters
At the time of the vote, there were 27 residents who had active overnight parking permits who lost their ability to park on their own streets
City staff RECOMMENDED AGAINST removing these 320 overnight permit parking spaces, yet Council voted to remove them all
INCLUDING OUR LOCAL WARD COUNCILLOR BRAD BRADFORD!
Issue Highlights
In October 2019 the City Clerk was directed to poll residents ONLY on the streets targeted to have overnight permit parking removed (Pine Crescent, Glen Ames, Long Crescent, Glen Oak Drive, Balsam Road, Pine Glen Road, and Glen Stewart Crescent). A letter from Councillor Brad Bradford (Ward 19, Beaches - East York) to Toronto East York Community Council in September 2019 recommended polling residents on the affected streets.
The majority of residents on these streets voted in favour of removing overnight permit parking - the survey did not discuss the potential impacts on the area from removing overnight permit parking.
At the time, there were 320 permitted parking spaces designed on these seven streets, with 27 residents currently holding valid resident overnight parking permits.
City staff recommended against removing these overnight parking permits due to the presence of objections received from residents on all affected streets, and that it would prohibit 27 permit holding residents from parking on their streets.
Beaches-East York Councillor Brad Bradford voted in favour of removing the 320 overnight parking permit spots on the affected streets.
In the staff report to Council it was estimated that the lost revenue from the removal of these parking permits was $17,000 annually.
Beach Residents Want To Know...
Why did staff only seek the opinions of those residents on streets that would potentially have their overnight parking permits removed?
Why was there no impact analysis on the spillover effect of overnight parking moving to already crowded streets in the adjacement areas? Why was there no thought given to potential mitgation plans or efforts on how to alleviate fallout from this decision?
Why did our own ward councillor Brad Bradford think it was appropriate to ask only those residents on affected streets for their opinions when it should have been obvious this decision would affect a much larger area?
