Changing the drinking age in the Los Angeles county, to an age where both genders are capable of making more responsible choices can help make safer changes. There are many teenagers who start drinking at an early age and once they get older they become heavy drinkers. There have been many parties in Los Angeles where teenagers drink illegally because of peer pressure and assume they look cool doing it. Scientifically men are said to mature at the age of 40 and women at the age of 30. The drinking age is 21 in Los Angeles, which is an age where men and women are not capable of making wise choices especially while intoxicated. According to Pitkanen, Lyyra "it was assumed that the early age at onset of drinking would be a risk for later heavy use of alcohol and problem drinking in both genders, and that the risk would be higher the earlier the use of alcohol was initiated." (Age of Onset, 653) drinking at an early age makes it easier to become an alcoholic. The law in Los Angeles needs to be highly enforced on young children, more programs need to be provided that help them stay away from alcohol and emotional support for children who deal with alcoholic family members.
