Unsafe drinking water is a health risk to the people.
Poor quality of drinking water is a key development challenge as People suffer from water-borne diseases. These increase economic losses to the families and the society. The worst affected are the population living in small towns, rural and urban slums. Many drink and cook chemically contaminated water.
Less than 50 per cent of the population in India has access to safely managed drinking water.
Chemical contamination of water, mainly through fluoride and arsenic, is present in 1.96 million dwellings.
