The disc golf course here was established in 1987, with 9 holes (later upgraded to 18), at the request of then superintendent Dave Pyle. It has since become known as one of the best disc golf courses in the country! The game is played much like golf, but instead of golf balls and clubs, it is played with specialty discs (similar to frisbees).
Disc golf, originally known as tin lid golf, was invented in the early 1900s by a group of elementary school kids. It grew started to grow in popularity during the 1960s and now there are over 6000 courses in the United States and Canada which accounts for 75% of the worlds disc golf courses. The Professional Disc Golf Association, PDGA, was formed in 1976 to help grow and promote the sport. It now hosts tournaments including an annual tour championship The game continues to gain popularity and it currently one of the fastest-growing sports in America. Seven of the Delaware state parks have disc golf courses so get to practicing so you'll be ready for National Disc Golf Day on August 1!
