About Me

Hello and welcome to my professional ePortfolio! My name is Brian Callahan and I am an Educational Consultant for the State Support Team in Ohio. This is my 12th year in education in which I am excited to celebrate this journey! It has been a privilege to serve a variety of communities and students over the past 12 years. My previous employments include building adminstrator, classroom teacher, and coach.  When I am not focusing on education I like to spend time with my family and explore new things around us. Also, I enjoy reading, creating artwork, and staying physically active. I live in Twinsburg with my wife, Katie, and our two children, Bennett and Carsen.

My Journey

Overview

I currently work as an Educational Consultant with the State Support Team for Team 3. Prior to this role, I served as a building administrator at Streetsboro Middle School during the 2021-2022 school year. Before that, I worked in administration at Field Local Schools for three years. My career in education started as a teacher of health and physical education, where I spent seven years before transitioning into educational administration. Below, you can find more details about my various roles throughout my career.

Administration Experience

As an educational consultant, my mission is to foster deeper levels of learning for each child, including children with disabilities and children from other traditionally marginalized groups who are often at risk of experiencing learning difficulties and/or school failure. I strive to reduce learning and achievement gaps among groups of children. To accomplish this, I support districts to provide leadership and organizational supports that foster a culture of inquiry and continuous learning on the part of all district personnel in order to provide equitable access to high-quality instruction and support for all children in every classroom in every school across the district. I provide equitable access to high-quality instruction and support, and improve learning outcomes for each child or youth, thereby meeting the requirements of Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA), and applicable state requirements. Lastly, I continuously and systematically improve instructional practice through the use of evidence-based instructional frameworks, methodologies, and practices, serving districts and community schools in Cuyahoga County as a part of Ohio's Statewide System of Supports, specifically as a member of State Support Team 3 (SST3).

As an Assistant Principal at SMS, I was responsible for a variety of operational and instructional practices of the building. I served on several committees including PBIS, MTSS, CARE team, BLT, and BLMC. These committees help drive our goal of producing a safe school environment for all learners while examining best teaching practices to engage all learners. SCS serves a diverse learning community in which every day we strive to meet the needs of all our students. From equity and inclusion to best teaching practices, I looked to empower our students to use their voices to produce a welcoming learning environment.

Prior to SCS, I served as an Assistant Principal at Field Middle School for the 2020-2021 school year. During that time, the building served grades 6-8 with approximately 66 staff members and 457 students. I assisted with the daily operations of the building while providing instructional leadership for our staff. Some of my duties include OTES evaluations, co-chairman of PBIS, district representative for IEP meetings, and operational/safety routines to ensure safety for both students and staff.

Prior to my move to the middle school, I served as the assistant principal at Suffield Elementary Schools at Field Local Schools. Both buildings serve students in grades K-5 with a variety of student needs including mild-moderate, moderate-severe, economically disadvantaged, and behaviorally challenged. In my attempt to help students grow, some highlights of this year include my research and implementation of a social-emotional learning curriculum, development of PLC framework for staff, data collection for PBIS, attendance at a Leader In Me training, and creation of community lunch circles for students.  I have assisted in the daily operations and management at both buildings. In my tenure in administration, I have found great pleasure in serving our teachers, students, and community members. I am eager and excited to learn more each day and plan on having a long career in education administration.

Teaching Experience

My teaching career ended at Aurora City School as a health and physical education teacher in Aurora, Ohio. I taught 6th-9th grade students while coaching a variety of sports throughout the year. I served three years in Aurora and seven years overall in teaching. Some of my accomplishment in Aurora include the development of Intelligence Exploration (I.E.) and the creation of our BrainFit Room. I.E. is a choice-based program where students get to select their courses in Art, Industrial Arts, Computer Tech, Health, and Physical Education classes. This was  project-based learning in which students would have to "show out" their learning. This would allow students to show mastery of a certain concept or standard in multiple ways. The different ways would include, but not limited to, the use of technology, live demonstrations, and tangible creations. This "show out" would be displayed for others to view during certain times of the year (i.e., conferences).  The BrainFit Room is a multisensory room to enhance learning through movement. This was accomplished by obtaining grants and funding to outfit an old weight room into this newly designed functional area. Prior to my time at Aurora City Schools, I was employed by Ravenna City Schools (three years) and Parma City Schools (1 year).

I obtained my Masters Degree in Educational Leadership from American College of Education in March 2018. My Bachelor’s Degree in Health and Physical Education was from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, which I completed in 2011. I am currently a doctoral student at American College of Education for Educational Leadership.  Expected graduation date is 2025.

Educational Goal

My goal in education is to empower students to not only thrive in the world of tomorrow but also to be active participants in building it.

Educational Philosophy

Our young learners must be at the center piece of their education in order to create meaningful connections to the content. We must develop their skill set to allow them to build a future world in which they wil thrive in.  All students can learn regardless of ability level. It is upon the allied professional communities of teaching, care giving, and educational leadership that our students are exposed to best practice; best practice that focuses on an individual’s creativity, mindfulness, team working abilities, and problem-solving skills. Students should be exposed to authentic learning experience that will drive the passion for learning and  innovation. Appropriate technology skills are undoubtedly necessary for future success. We must create learners who can problem-solve and think independently but most importantly, work collaboratively. In this educational experience, we must think about whole-body-teaching, including skills and practices to improve their physical and mental well-being.
