Masonry that is stained, pitted or starting to degrade or flake off is doing so because of ALKALI. This is a naturally occurring substance (chemical) in the soil that is found all over the arid Southwest, including the St. George area. When this alkali builds up on brick block or natural stone, not only is it unsightly, it can also literally eat it away as seen in the photo to the left. This photo is an extreme case, but is not uncommon in the area. The degree to which a structure has alkali issues is dependent upon the actual soil that the structure is built on. Some areas of town have a lot of it, and some have less. Also, it is not uncommon for soil to be moved around from one part of town to another. If you have alkali problems, and your neighbors don't, the soil beneath your structure was most likely hauled in from some other location. Most people have seen alkali damage but don't know what it is, where it came from, or what to do about it. See more before and after pictures of alkali removal. This wall in the picture to the left was hit by a car. This is only one type of repair that can be done. Anything made of masonry (brick, block or rock) can be repaired/replaced. Because Brick, Block, Rock solutions is operated by a state licensed experienced Mason, the only limitation is a job that would be too big for an individual to take on and complete in a reasonable amount of time. For pictures of before and after repair work, go to the top of this page and touch "Gallery", then scroll down to "Repairs".
The natural stone fireplace shown at left was part of an interior home remodel. The definition of a "small project" is one that can completed by one Mason within a reasonable amount of time. There are many example pictures of completed small projects in the gallery section. Go to the top of this page and touch "Gallery", then scroll down to "Small Projects".
