Masonry that is stained, pitted or starting to degrade or flake off is doing so because of ALKALI. This is a naturally occurring substance in the soil that is found all over the arid Southwest, including the St. George area. When this alkali builds up on brick block or natural stone, not only is it unsightly, it can also literally eat it away as seen in the photo to the left. This photo is an extreme case, but is not uncommon in the area. The degree to which a structure has alkali issues is dependent upon the actual soil that the structure is built on. Some areas of town have a lot of it, and some have less. Most people have seen alkali damage but don't know what it is, where it came from, or what to do about it.
