Detroit has for decades declined in social, education and economic prosperity. With the loss of the middle class, Detroit schools have lost the funding to produce quality students to feed colleges and universities. The Black Bottom Project CDC (BBP) was created to help solve the problems of economic disparity and social destruction of our communities.
After studying the needs of inner city Detroit the BBP has developed a plan to re-energize the community with arts and science. The plan includes a Black Bottom Village (BBV) to anchor the community with entertainment and education. This includes building a Motown Entertainment District along Grand Boulevard from Grand River to the Chrysler freeway as an economic engine to the surrounding communities.
Joeleo Smith, Director Black Bottom Project CDC
Our plans started in 2014 when we purchased three blighted homes across the street from Northwestern High School and started rehab to remove the visual scars our children see going to and coming from the new Northwestern High school. Our plans currently are to replace BLIGHT with LIGHT with a Black Bottom Economic Incubation Center featuring a Motown Internet Cyber Cafe, Coding Hub, Digital Media Labs, Digital Art Gallery, Production Studio, Village with a Garden Amphitheater. We are lead by retired California State University Lecturer and Technologist Mr. Joeleo Smith. We have a community of teachers, tutors, mentors, and entrepreneurs at the Black Bottom Village. We will offer students a safe and supportive work space. Black Bottom Village will also offer student housing. We will offer our guests a supportive, positive and safe environment, encouraging and impementing personal growth through Art, Science, Design, Technology, App Building, Urban Development / Urban Renewal and Gardening, and coding workshops to our community.
