Because technology is dynamic, our understanding of the most effective and responsive means to connect with students must be as dynamic. Ongoing professional development, then, is a central component to effective online teaching.
Recognizing that technology is ever-changing and evolving, I knew that it would be wise to be better prepared to work with such technologies. Prior to embarking on this journey, I took it upon myself to take the College Counseling Online course offered through @ONE, which introduced me to Cranium Café. After completing this course, I was hungry for more, and the result was a two year journey into the world of online teaching--culminating in this very capstone.
Through my @ONE courses, I have learned so much and have been exposed to a variety of technologies that can help students better connect online. In seeing how our wonderful course facilitators modeled what an engaging and well-designed course looks and feels like, I now have aspirations to do just the same. I have always been comfortable with technology, but through taking these courses, I am now more confident in my abilities to create a course that is dynamic, equitable, and most importantly, conveys to students that I am here to support them.
I am eager to officially teach online, and in the wake of all classes moving online indefinitely, it's starting to look like a real possibility. In the meantime, I'll be preparing by refining my course(s) through my Canvas sandbox, and continuing to soak up as much information as I can.
In 2018, I attended the Online Teaching Conference and the following sessions:
I haven't been able to attend since, but my hope is to attend in 2021. I learned so much in the one day I was there, and it was great to see some familiar faces from the @ONE courses I had taken.
I am currently enrolled in my final course required (prior to the Capstone) for the Certificate in Online Teaching & Design offered through @ONE. It's important to me to have all the possible knowledge I can consume.
I do not currently belong to a Community of Practice because as an adjunct it’s difficult being at two campuses, and not having much time outside of my current work schedule. I do think, however, it may be useful to create a smaller community just within counseling where those currently teaching or interested in teaching online can share ideas of what has or hasn’t worked in the online environment. Counseling actually uses a Canvas shell for department-related documents and updates, and we have a module dedicated to shared activities we can use for our courses. This would actually be the perfect place to expand to include web-based activities. The issue, however, is that the momentum has died and no one has been updating this module. It would really require someone’s dedication to it, and I’m not sure anyone is up for the task with all of their other responsibilities. This is a conversation I intend to have with my chair.
