I was signed up to give a Bricks By The Bay 2020 workshop on the new Powered UP components, but found the cost of buying and investigating all of them was prohibitive. I instead focused on using the PUP City hub with color sensor and train motor to recreate a train bypass operation made famous by a master GBC builder in Japan.

That project was fun but not practical for a public show because it required a program on a Windows 10 laptop running all the time.

I recreated the bypass operation using two Mindstorms EV3 bricks so it could be part of a public show, then decided to bring back the GBC Wave Train. The public enjoyed my previous version, but it was a constant headache to maintain and was taken apart in 2018.

My ancient knees can't tolerate running a big operation on the floor, and I don't have enough table space to combine both the bypass and wave operations, so this video shows them separately. Hopefully we will be back to running public shows next summer and you can see it all together at Bricks By The Bay 2021.

The music achieved by the NXT programmable brick by generating the appropriate sound frequencies and time durations (in milliseconds). We have some musical background (Adam's played bassoon for the nutcracker for several years) which helped the process.
